The Marco Polo, part of Transocean Tours, is a Germany-based cruise line that offers none of the extravagance of the newer mega ships but gets back to the basics with traditional cruising experiences. It's not flashy, but it is a traditional cruise ship offering quality food and entertainment at an affordable price.

Ship Highlights

  • Easy embarkation and disembarkation with no overcrowding onboard
  • Many enrichment lectures offered
  • Intimate-sized lounges and recreation areas
  • Comfortable and traditional cruising experience
  • Recent refurbishments throughout the ship
  • Open deck space

Cuisine

There are varied dining options onboard the Marco Polo ship. You'll eat in one of two main dining rooms, either the Waldorf for formal dining or Marco's for a more casual experience. American and British favorites are displayed in terms of cuisine. There are two--set seatings for dinner, with offerings ranging from soups and salads to pastas and prime rib. Service is excellent, especially during dinner. Breakfast and lunch buffets provide a backdrop for many satisfying dishes, such as omelettes and made-to-order pasta. For tea lovers, Marco's puts out a nice spread each afternoon, complete with cookies, sandwiches, cakes and of course a range of quality teas.

Entertainment and Nightlife

If you enjoy traditional cruise entertainment without all the glitz and glamour, you'll be in good company on a Marco Polo cruise. The Marco Polo showcases two production shows per week, plus smaller, twice nightly shows featuring magicians, comedians and musicians. For soothing piano playing, head to the Captain's Club Lounge, or grab a drink at Scott's Bar on Deck 9 where the orchestra also performs. You'll also find disco dancing here, but it's not as hopping as on other, more lively ships. That being said, you won't be at a loss for what to do when the sun sets. Choose from laid back lounges such as Palm Court and Columbus Lounge, the library for a quiet moment or the boutiques for some understated shopping.

Cabins

Cabins are standard on the Marco Polo, even a bit smaller than you would find on, say, a luxury liner. This adds to the charm of the ship, but it does get a little cramped if you're used to grander accommodations. Choose from staterooms such as Deluxe Suites, Superior Oceanview, Deluxe Inside, Standard Inside and more. Typical of older ships, the Marco Polo features rooms of varying sizes and shapes, which lends a unique factor to the staterooms. In each cabin, you'll find the standard offerings: hair dryers, safes, phones, bathrobes and TVs. Higher end suites feature shower/tub combos, sitting areas and refrigerators.

Recreation

The Marco Polo ship reviews rate well in terms of open deck space. You won't feel cramped here, with an open layout, promenade, pool, Wellness Center and Fitness Center. The Fitness Center offers a wide spectrum of relatively new workout equipment, while the beauty salon and spa features the usual treatments. For those who strive to stay fit, the walking/jogging track is ideal for a brisk walk or run.

Onboard Fees

Gratuities are included in the price, so no need to figure in a tip at the end of your stay. The usual extras should be expected, such as photos, laundry service, and alcohol.

Taking the Kids

The Marco Polo ship is not geared towards youngsters in any way. If you have a young family, it's best to seek out a cruise line that has extensive onboard activities for children.
