The MS Sapphire ship operated by Louis Cruise Lines will be retired in the Fall of 2010.

The Sapphire generally sails the Mediterranean. The second smallest ship in the fleet, the Sapphire accommodates more than 550 passengers. Even though the ship on the smaller end of the scale, it has an expansive array of amenities. The food and recreational opportunities onboard compare to any other. Because it underwent an extensive remodel two decades ago, the Sapphire offers comfortable, relatively modern accommodations for passengers of all ages.

Ship Highlights

  • Cruises from France and Italy
  • Port-intensive itineraries with affordable price tags
  • Clean and well maintained
  • Traditional cruise set-ups
  • Limited onboard activities allow for several excursion offerings

Cuisine

Food onboard the Sapphire is tasty and satisfying, ranging from the basics to elaborate dishes. Cuisine appeals to a broad range of tastes, so you should be able to find something you like very easily. Set seating's are offered at the Four Seasons restaurant in the evening, with buffets for lunch and breakfast. Buffets may be offered on deck, weather permitting.

Entertainment and Nightlife

Passengers have several options of comfortable lounges and bars for an after-dinner drink or even dancing. Choose from the Cafe de Paris, Hurry's Bar, Marco Polo Lounge or Raffles Disco. Production shows are aren't as grand as on other luxury liners, but entertaining nonetheless. Movie lovers will enjoy the cinema which shows popular films of the day.

Cabins

The cabins are standard on the Sapphire, with all staterooms equipped with direct dial phone, thermostat and shower. Choose from standard inside cabin with accommodations for two people, deluxe outside cabins for three people, and superior outside cabins or four people, among others.

Most cabins come with two twin beds, but some suites offer one large one. Staterooms are typical of those you would find on a smaller cruise line, with just enough space to fit comfortably.

Recreation

For those days when you're not in port, there are plenty of things onboard the Sapphire ship that will capture your interest. Take a quiet moment to read in the library on the Riviera Deck, get some exercise in the Fitness Center, roll the dice at the Monte Carlo Casino, catch some rays on the Sun Deck, or take a swim in the large swimming pool on the Lido Deck. Need to get out of the sun and do a little shopping?

You can also head to the boutique, on board the ship, for clothing, accessories and souvenirs.

Onboard Fees

While enjoying your stay, be prepared to pay out of pocket for a few extra amenities. These include Internet usage, safety boxes, photos, medical services, duty free shops onboard, beauty salon services, massages and laundry services.

Taking the Kids

A small children's playroom is located on the Lido Deck, where various programs are offered for the little ones, earning positive Sapphire reviews in terms of kids' activities.

Originally built in 1967 as the Italia, the current Sapphire cruise ship offers all the charm of an older ship but with many modern conveniences featured on today's luxury liners. Since Louis Cruises are so port intensive, you may not find as much to do onboard here as you would on other ships. You will, however, be treated to a cruising experience that showcases comfort, relaxation, quality food and recreation.
