Looks like you have the right attitude to get you through the potential rough spots.
We went to Italy a few yeas back (not on a cruise). I am 1/2 Italian and I understand more than I speak. I found in Rome that they preferred to talk to me in English instead of my broken Italian.
It is true that depending on the dialect you might not understand a thing that they are saying.
