Not really another choice for a second port when sailing from NOLA or Galveston on a five-day cruise. Seven day cruises don't go there as there are better choices, but on a 5-day there are not a lot of alternatives.
If one wants to avoid Progreso, take a seven day cruise and don't sail during hurricane season.
I've always had a good time there.
