As I said before I agree that the practice doesn't seem fair, but I have no inside knowledge to know why most cruise lines do practice this. It may be just because they can or maybe there is some reason for it, but I am not able to understand why.

As far as looking elsewhere, even though Princess is very good, I know that I certainly would look around, if I could find a similar reliable cruise line at a much better price.

I would still like to hear more from those who have been able to get around this problem by booking in the US.
