Yes, the balcony is a big part of the cabin and does extend your space. I have only stayed in balcony cabins on big cruise ships. [As opposed to Windjammer ships!]
It is so lovely to sit outside and read, gaze at the ocean, enjoy a drink or snack. It's peaceful compared to many other areas of the ship, your own private paradise.
If a person can't afford it, or doesn't choose to spend the $ for a balcony room, that's his/her business. Any room on a cruise ship is better than staying at home!
But if a person can afford a balcony cabin -- go for it!
