We walked there late afternoon the first day and a couple of times the following morning. It's quite spectacular and I would highly recommend staying there rather than coming in on a tour bus.
I stayed in this hotel last November. It is in the middle of the park with no other nearby nightlife but an awesome place to stay. The peace and beauty of the hotel as well as the proximity of the falls was great. Every night they had entertainment in the bar to go with the caipirinhas as well as a pool side Brazilian BBQ. I also recommend going to the bird park located just outside the main gate of the national park. The speed boat tour under the falls and the white water rafting tour is also a kick.
