Yes!! We saw them the first morning at sea last week!! Sunday July 7th to be exact. Right off the port side of the Sea Princess. There were about 6 if I counted right. It was one of the coolest things I've ever seen!
Yes I have seen Orca pods every time I have sailed Alaska. I have seen them in Juneau once but I have seen them doing a whale watch out of Seward every trip. I have occasionally seen them from the cruise ship.
I just got back from Alaska yesterday. I had a blast! Well to answer your questions on orca pods, I went on an orca and wildlife excursion and the captain said that that was te best tour he had ever had. We saw an orca pod of about 5, which was 3 females 1 male and a baby that they could not tell the sex of yet. The best part of that trip was that we actually saw all of the orcas hunting a porpise and then the whales jumped out of the water head first. IT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!! The captain just said "Put your cameras down everybody, becasue this is a once in a lifetime experience!" We also saw a few humpback whales. When you go to Alaska be sure to take one of these tours. It will be the experience of a lifetime!
We did a whale watch with Captain Larry in Juneau last month.Saw a few Humpbacks and a pod of Orcas. He said he has been doing the whale watch for about 15 years and only twice did he not spot whales. It was awesome...you will love it.
This is the main thing we want to see in alaska, please let me know.
I have always seen orcas. But for clairfication- Auke Bay - where the Juneau trips goes only has orcas coming in every 5-10 days, humpbacks are daily sightings. For best orca viewing go out of Friday Harbor Wa or Victoria BC, I go every trip and have seen between 30-50 on those trips. I will be in Alert Bay in a few weeks. Viewing from the ship will result in a few minutes of great sightings but it does require a good deal of invested time out on the front deck with a good pair of wide angle binoculars to increase your chances. Best viewing will be the last sailing day back into Vancouver usually in the area evening- dusk. Robson Bight- Alert Bay.
