Going on NCL Sun 7/27. Does anyone know if you can actually hike up to the side/face of Mendenhall Galcier?? I went to the visitor center's website and pulled up a trail map but it isn't clear as to whether or not you can actually get right up to it.
The face of it is in the lake, and dangerous, but there are trails to the waterfall and the sides. juneauphotos.com has pics from the trail and it looks gorgeous. There's a website that has hiking info but I can't find it right now. Maybe Karen has it and will post.
No you can't get to the glacier from the east side but the longer west side hiking does go to the glacier but this hike takes several hours and you must be physically fit, also a car is needed to the trailhead. The East Loop trail is 3 1/2 miles and trailhead is behind the visitor center.
