Mendenhall glacier isn't the only excellent glacier on the Juneau icefield- just the most known. You can do better pricewise going with Coastal rather than TEMSCO perhaps- who has the permits for Mendenhall. But to answer- a glacier helicopter landing is my TOP choice of tour in Alaska. Floatplanes are great too and some of your choice may depend on your flying experience, but the glaicer helicopter landing wins for me.
Thanks for the tip. I called Coastal and we have a reservation. Another question -- is there any advantage to going in the afternoon vs the morning or vice versa? Is there morning mist or afternoon wind that's pretty typical?
watch the weather carefully...if inclement weather is in the works...go for Juneau...However the misty's I have been to 8 seperate times. Beyond gorgeous and saw a ton of bears and wild goats. If the weather is bad, they don;t fly.
I just returned from Alaska yesterday. I recommend the glacier helicopter tour over Misty Fjords. Misty Fjords was pretty but similar scenery to Yosemite and other national parks. The glacier helicopter tour was special and much more exciting.
