Default White Pass Rail-AM? or PM?

We're on our lst cuise to Alaska in mid-August. We plan to take the White Pass Scenic Railway in Skagway. 2 times are available....8:20AM and 12:45PM. Would love to hear comments from experienced cruisers regarding "visibility"........ie: better in AM or early PM?

Thanks, Marty

I did the afternoon trip last year. That day at least PM was much clearer. If you like trains, then you'll love the White Pass!

We went on the morning tour recently, and took the bus up and the train down. The fog was really thick going up, but had cleared out enough for the trip down on the train. I would suggest, based on that experience, that you do the afternoon.

When we went we did the early one and had no fog problem at all.

We went AM on 22 June. Absolutely no problem. Excellent weather conditions. Temp. 24 degrees Celsius. In my opinion it does not matter. Everything depends weather on the day you travel.

Good luck.

I recommend the pm train, but for a very important factor- the ability to get to the Park Service visitor center and do some of their activities. All the info there will greatly enhance your later train trip. Located at Broadway and Second. http://www.nps.gov/klgo/schedule.htm

Hello to Thoth, Phyll, Donna, Sundar and Karen16!!

I LOVE this site! Thanks for all the great advice !!! The 4 of us will pick one or the other in next day or so based on all of your collective experience!

I don't think we can miss either way! Lordy, this traveler is scared witless about heights! I'll NOT be the one, outside between the cars, trying to get the best view!!

Thanks again, Marty

Oh Marty,
The views from the train are just awesome, you won't believe it. I do have some pictures at the end of my Celebrity Infinity review:

Alaska cruise on Celebrity Infinity

just be sure to get outside at some point and smell all that fresh air:-)

Hi Donna:

Looked at your pictures. Thanks for the links. Pretty spectacular! That must have been one long train to get some of those.

Alright, I will make myself go outside to smell the fresh, pine air. But, I will NOT look down! Okay?

Not surprised re: falling asleep on trip back down. We boat on the East Coast alot.....a few hours of cruising and fresh, sea air and we all need "nappy time"! It's usually around 1-3pm!

Glad to hear the passengers change sides on way back down. No need to worry where you sit!

Thanks, Donna. Marty
