Bear Watch Flight excursion

Hi All:

I am planning a cruise for the end of July and would like know which location in Ketchikan is best for a Bear Watch Flight excursion? Is Neets Bay any good at this time of year?

I understand that sightings are not guaranteed and to check the vendorís sightings prior to booking, but I wanted to see if anyone had 1st hand experience.

Also, when is the best time of day to book this type of trip (morning, afternoon?) Are they often canceled as a result of the weather?

Thanks,
Jack

I have been to both Anan and Neets Bay out of Ketchikan. Anan is superior and can be direct booked. Neets Bay is good too however but you will need to book via the ship shore excursions with Pro Mech, they do not direct book cruise ship passengers. There is also Traitor's Cove to consider, but that usually is a later run. These tours are much less canceled than other flights, so book with who fits your schedule best. For clarification- this is for BLACK bear viewing, some people prefer the browns.

Is the 1st week in August a good time for bear viewing?

We went to Neets Bay in early August last year. Saw loads of bears. Flight not as long as advertised in brochure but spectacular and the weather was wonderful. It all depends on the salmon whether you see bears or not. Some people on our cruise went to Traitor's Cove, on the same day, and didn't see any bears. We were told that the salmon run a bit later there. However, even if the salmon are running, I guess you could still be unlucky if you get to a viewing area at just the wrong time. We were at Neets Bay from about 10-11a.m. We found it quite difficult to find out about the best places to go until we found this web-site.
Hope you are as lucky as we were!
