Top tours seem to be Whale watching with Capt Larry, and Glacier/helicopter landings .Some ppl do both, and my understanding is you save an hrs time if you book them together.Im doing a Glacier trek but wish I had booked together with Capt Larry for the whale watch too.Oh well..guess I have to go back! But,Im sure someone else could fill you in on this, since Ive not been yet!

Have a great cruise! Dot

From what I have read the whale watching tour is tops. We are booked with the Orca Enterprises and Captain Larry for an evening tirp. He must be good as there are lots of comments about his boats, btw, this is not a cheap tour.
Or you can book thru your cruise ship. do it early as they fill up fast.
If that is not in your budget go to the web site for Juneau and see what else there is to do. We also plan to see the state capital building as we like history of the U.S.

For clarification, whale watching via the ship tours have good availablity, the flights are what you need to book way ahead. I have been on a lot of Juneau tours. Best is to look over a shore excursion list and NARROW down your interests. Budget fully. there are MANY excellent tours to consider. Repost more specific information, then you will get info from posters who have BEEN on the tours.

There are more "top tours" in Alaska than you can do in 10 trips. First hand reports of tours can offer more added information in my opinion. Not looking for flames.

How far ahead to you have to book Capt. Larry? We will be in Juneau Sept 1st. Also has anyone rented a van and driver to tour Juneau.

Orca Enterprises is becoming VERY popular and their bookings are way up. I would book as soon as your plans are firm. As for a van and driver- do your homework and DETERMINE why you would want this? Mendenhall doesn't need any commentary and is a cheap shuttle bus ride or cab for a group. There is plenty IN town to consider and a walking tour map is the best way to get around. Outside of town- ??? Request their visitor guide www.traveljuneau.com If you want an "tour" MGT offers a very good city/Mendenhall combo for about $20

I'm very keen in the whale watching. I hope to see Orca. Is it recommended to book the trip through cruiseship or direct from Orca Enterprises ?

My cruiseship offers a trip combination trip for "Whale Watching, Mendenhall Glacier & Orca Point Lodge - 6hours at $160". Is this recommended ? They have another excursion on just "Whale Watching & Orca Point Lodge - 5 hrs @ $134". Wonder if it's worth going Mendenhall Glacier since I'll be going to Hubbard Glacier another day.

Any recommended time for whale watching ? Afternoon or Evening ?

Very slim chance of orca whales out of Juneau, they are seen only every 5-10 days there. Humpbacks are 100% of the trips. If you want orcas- you need to go on a tour out of Victoria BC or Friday Harbor Wa. and invest a couple days there.

The problem with the Orca Point Lodge add ons is less flexability on whale watching since they have to be there at a certain time for the salmon bake. IF you want whale watching- it is beneficial to go with those. I have gone with Orca Enterprises for years, they run an excellent tour. They also may be able to drop off at Mendenhall glacier, then you would just shuttle back to the ship when you are ready to leave. It makes no difference on time of tour. If you have an interest in glaciers Mendenhall is an easy look, but you will also get a view from your shuttle to the whale watch, if that is all you need.
