The Carnival Spirit is sailing out of Seattle now.

Carnival Freedom (7 Day Western Caribbean) 2008

I have heard the reason why the changed it is that it will be cheaper and easier for people to fly into Seattle instead of Anchorage or Vancouver.

Won't the Spirit just settle in Anchorage. I don't understand! I know Carnival will continue with Alaska cruises! I'm glad I'm booked for this May!!!
You are NEVER going to see any major cruiseline "settle" in Anchorage. They ALL would have to port in Ca. at some point. So unless they are looking at 14 day cruises, isn't going to happen.
Yea Yukon,
I don't get it either, the cruise season in 2010 should be normal after the winter olympics, right?
Yes, absolutely things will bve back to normal weeks before the cruise season starts. Well perhaps not normal, as the transportation system is going to be much better than it is now, including a SkyTrain rapid transit line going right from Canada Place to the airport

Canada Line ( YVR Airport to Canada Place) will be inservice
by Oct or Nov of this year (2009) . They currently just have to finish
the stations. Cars are already running tests on the tracks.

I don't think the olympics have anything to do with reduction in AK cruising. I read an article on "the other board" that there has been a reduced demand for AK cruises. Some feel it is a combination of the economy, airfare to AK/WA/VYK, protest over $50/pp cruise tax by AK.
On the seatraders site today there is an article reporting on a tourism conference yesterday. One of the topics was AK turism board trying to "woo the cruise lines into returning to AK" hmmm don't know what that is all about exactly. I know on one of our AK cruises a cruise line officer told us that Ak has one of the highest port charges in the industry.
Certainly, if demand is down the lines will sail more profitable routes
I am just starting to plan for Alaska CCL Spirit 9/7/10. It keeps popping up all over the place on cruise websites. Are you saying they are going to be cancelled now? The cruise I've been looking at starts in Seattle and ends in Vancouver.
Please advise. Thanks.

I'm confused about what you're confused about. Carnival says that the Spirit will be sailing to Alaska from Seattle on Sept 7, 2010.
Alaska tourism cnference summary is one of the front page articles today on the other board.
According to the article RCL, Cruise West, Carnival, Princess and HAL have all reduced their AK cruises for 2010. It does not cite particular ships but does blame the $50 head tax for the cruise line reduction in service. The estimated loss for 2010 in Juneau is $25 million!!!
Interesting article, although it does not address your particular query.
