Give Everyone a Lanyard

I've read a lot of cruise boards and almost every tips thread suggests you take a lanyard and either take along a hole punch with you or seek out a hole punch onboard the ship and get your ID card punched so you can wear it around your neck.

Lanyards in bulk cost pennys. If the cruise at check in punched the card and put it on a lanyard then people don't have to worry about making sure they have a hole punch or that it gets punched in the right spot etc. It's done and ready for them. If you don't want to wear the lanyard you can take it off.

And then everyone gets a nice little souvenir.

I've put this on every comment card I've ever written with one slight exception (which the lines outa' like). Punch the hole in the card then if they want a lanyard they can buy the ones they already sell in the gift shop. This is a win-win for the cruise lines.

Make it an option. I don't like lanyards and I'm sure many others don't based on the number of people I see at work with and without lanyards.

No one has mentioned that on Carnival you can get your card punched. And, they give you a free cord to put it on. I think it is just in the casino not sure. The cord is long and can be clipped to a purse, belt loop and if you want you can clip it together are wear it around your neck. I don't recal if Royal Carribean had it It is nice if you play slots it helps you remember to take it out of the machine.

Good idea, but here's a snag. When I did a TransAtlantic on the QE2 this past April, I asked the woman at check-in if she could punch a hole in my card so that I could put it on my lanyard. She told me that if she did that, I wouldn't be able to order drinks onboard the ship. The hole punched in the card was how the bar staff determined who could not be served because they were underage.

Sounded stupid to me ... because I am obviously over 21. But that was her story, and she was sticking to it.

But I agree wholeheartedly with you. It would be nice to be at least offered the option of having your card punched and put on a cruise line logo lanyard at embarkation.

Blue skies ...

While I think it's a good idea, glad you made it removeable. Call me vain, but I wouldn't walk around with a lanyard around my neck anymore than I would wear the cruise ship sticker on my shirt in port, or wear chains on my glasses. LOL

The first time I saw an old geezer in the casino with a lanyard attached to his shirt and the card in the slot he was playing, I nearly busted a gut. It looked like a dead-man switch, in case he fell off the stool.

I'm wierd....

I've always gotten my card punched at the purser's desk. Never failed me yet.

I don't lik eth elanyards. I use a fanny pouch. To each, his own. :)

Yep, the lovely Mrs. Jones (Vita) always gets her sign-n-sail punched at the pursers desk too. When Carnival had the "Carnival Vacation Club" aboard, they gave away really nice lanyards, but that's history. Now you can get the lanyard at the casino, but it's kind of weird looking IMO. Vita bought a lanyard at Staples, or WalMart, and always uses it. I, like some of the others, don't like something hanging around my neck.

Hmm... I like this idea, but can see why it's not for everyone so it would definitely have to be optional.

Kids usually have their own card, right? I was wondering how my kids were going to keep track of their cards since summer clothes are notorious for having lame or non-existent pockets. I think they might like a lanyard, especially if we made it a project before we left home, that they could decorate with beads or pins or whatever (nothing too fancy).

As for hole-punching, there are always those clear plastic nametag holders that are meant to go on lanyards. You could slip your card in there so no holes would have to be made, and it would be easy to remove for a non-lanyard event like formal night. I made lanyard nametags for our Sunday School staff at church and they work great (and were CHEAP to make).

What about when you get on and off the ship at the different ports?? Wouldn't a "hole" interfer with the scanning process??

Kayak Captain February 29th, 2008 03:09 PM

No, not unless you get the hole punched in the wrong location. Just don't punch the magnetic strip. The pursers desk knows how to do this.
