Default Airplane watching in St Marteen/St Martin

Ive been to this island 2 times already on cruise ships. Once I rented a vehicle. I wasnt aware of the airport and the beach at the foot of the runway untill I got back home and found it from a link on the web..I thought..Next time I go there I want to witness 747s and planes landing less then 80 ft over my head on a beach..What a rush..What Im asking is..Is there anybody here that has gone to that beach from the cruise pier? and is there parking nearby within walking distance? I plan on renting a vehicle and drive over there..I was looking at google earth and there isnt really a direct route to get there. I will be taking my gps unit NUVI and make sure its programmed for St Marteen. I will be there on Carnival Miracle over the Thanksgiving week around Nov 23. Thanks.

We go to St. Maarten almost every year & stay for 10 days - 2 weeks.
We love to go to the Sunset Bar & Grill. This is a new name. Most know it as the Sunset Beach Bar. We hang out there alot.
If you have never been there & seen some of the big planes come in, you must watch this video. This will give you an idea of what it's like.
The biggest planes for Air France & KLM come in on Sunday.

If the link doesn't work, just copy & paste in your browzer.
It's awesome.

I know what its like. I was asking how to get there from the ships pier and if there are places to park near the beach. I just hope I can get my GPS to work properly since Im relying on that to get me there. It suprizes me that they allow people on that beach. If that was in the USA you coundnt get within 2 miles of the runway..

David,

You would be better served if you took a taxi from the pier.

Be aware of the time during your day there. Traffic builds along the road leading to the airport and you could be late getting back to the ship.

The taxis know the daily traffic concerns and can get you from point to point easily.

You already said it was not a direct route so don't make the day harder on yourself by getting lost.

Also, there are reports of rentals being broken into on the island-even the trunk-so your best bet is to let the locals taxi you around.

The SSBB was closed then reopened but there was not alot of land there for parking at all. There are a few hotels down the street but you are not likely able to park there unless you are a guest.

I have a post here on CM with details on the island and getting around. Just use the search feature keyword St. Martin (St. Maarten).

I think Sunset Beach bar is no more. Try google.

From what I understand it was damaged in a huricane and I think it had to be sold by the owners.

I dont think it has reopened yet.

But I've read there is another bar nearby that would be OK.

Take the taxi...go early and leave early. Traffic can get really bad going back to the ship.

It's now called Sunset Bar & Grill. It's open & doing good. We were just in St. Maarten for 10 days.[/b]

Default Airplane Viewing

David---we were just there. It is great!! Also about parking. You can find a place just past the end of the runway on the side street to the left. We found several. We rented a car however we wanted it all day. Traffic around the cruise dock area is rather hectic. It could take several minutes just to get in or out of that area. I would suggest you take a taxi from the cruise ship area to the end of the runway. It is rather inexpensive. Now getting back might be a different matter. Just note the route of the taxi and walk down the road at the side of the runway to the main street where there are plenty of taxis you can hail down. A note of caution---when a jet take soff at your end of the runway lots of sand will be blown by the jet engines exhaust. We saw some people failing to turn their heads of close their eyes with the result being scratched eyes which were very painful for them. This is one of the greatest photo opts I have seen anywhere in the world when it comes to close up airplane landing and taking off.
