Didn't see the poll when I posted...voted for the last choice " No I don't care...."

The CD should not be the sole factor. You decide if you let things that happen affect your enjoyment.

A good CD that pays attention to how the crew work and interact with the passengers to see where they can improve is important.

Its nice to see a CD walking out and about in all areas of the ship asking passengers about their experiences aboard so far.

We have seen a few CD's who just seem to be going thru the motions day after day putting on a good face but you can just feel they really could care less or wish they were somewhere else.

Cool Cruise Director

I could care less about the dumb things the CD does at showtime. That is really the only time I see him. I rarely listen to his constant announcements or watch his videos.

Far more important than his public presence is his administrative ability. Controlling and setting an example for his staff is vital. But his most important job, which we never see, is being a key member of the top management team and ensuring that all departments of the ship work together to present a seamless experience to the passengers. A ship in which the various departments are at war and staking out their own turf is not a place we want to be.

The CD's "presence" makes no difference to me. What I want is that he and his staff provide the activities and entertainment they are supposed to.

I am a trivia player and enjoy it. I would be a bit irritated if they scheduled that or another activity and then no one from the staff showed up.

Otherwise I could care less.

Take care,
Mike

I do belive a good cruise director does have some inpact on any cruise. For example, I was just reading in the Carnival folder about one that just wasn't doing his job, according to the cruiser. Certain activities were either late or not happening. Now, if this is the sole job of a cruise director, then in this case, it does matter to a cruise. I'm also thinking that these activities had problems, that may have had nothing to do with him/her.

Just an observation.....I noticed that other posts use the word "him" but here it has him/her.

Does anyone think think the sex of the CD matters also?
Anyone know the ratio of male to female cruise directors?

I don't base the success of my cruises on how jovial or entertaining the CD was. As others said, I am more concerned with the CD's management abilities - effectively supervising their staff, putting together a good schedule of activities and maintaining that schedule, and doing what he or she can to keep everything out of the ditches. I couldn't care less if they play a great fiddle or can sing and dance.

On one cruise there was a female CD, I'm sure there are few, but they are out there.

Don't really care who the CD is. I never go to the first night meet the staff program (or for that matter any of the shows) just not my thing.

My cruise last month watched the morning show to participate in the "who said" and thought the CD was a real bore ... on the other hand his assistant was great. Ran into the assistant later and asked if he wouldn't be a CD soon - he said he had no interest in doing it.

I was on one cruise where the CD was a woman - and she was awful as to be entertaining or a good manager, she wasn't. The crew were happy when she moved to another ship, which I cruised on shortly thereafter, BUT she was on vacation, so I missed her. That's the first time I've had an annoying CD and it just happened she was a woman.

I suppose really the work the CD does behind the scene, how they work with their staff and how they are projected through their staff is really more important than their stage presence.

I vaguely remember our first two CDs, not at all on our third cruise.

Ordinarily, I would have voted "somewhat", but after our last cruise I voted that the CD is VERY important. As noted above, it's not his/her stage presence that matters, (Frankly, I couldn't care less if I never actually saw the CD) it's the management ability that matters. The CD controls, and sets the tone for nearly all the activities aboard ship, and since the lovely Mrs. Jones (Vita) and I very rarely leave the ship, that's a MAJOR concern for me. Aboard our last cruise, nearly everything that the CD controls was "hosed up" in one way or the other. His entire staff had a "who gives a damn" attitude, and it was very clear that they couldn't wait to get back to their cabin and away from the passengers.
In reference to the male/female CD question, I have to say that I've sailed with 3 or 4 female CD's, and frankly, have enjoyed all of them. I don't think the sex of the CD makes a bit of difference.

Talking Female CD

We have cruised with two or three female CDs. Since the CDs presence makes no matter to me, as noted above, I could care less what sex they are.

All of the female CDs we cruised with were as good as the men.

And -- in the English language -- HE is still the neuter gender pronoun. Sorry, ladies, if you don't like it.
