Default Miss Manners

Just read something like this in the Miss Manners column (paraphrasing)

Reader Often when I am walking through the aisle of a restaurant or deck of a cruise ship, I encounter a server with a heavy tray of food or drink. I am the guest and should have the right of way. However, it would be easy to step aside and let them pass with they load.

Miss Manners Well trained staff will always defer to their guest. Well trained humans will not assert their privilege to cause others harm.

I agree completely...I cannot imagine not stepping aside to make this hard working person's job easier..My MIL, well into her dotage, carried heavy trays above her head, at the catering jobs she worked.

Well, when I was in Officer Training School, wearing shoulder boards with stripes on them, and feeling very important when enlisted men snapped to attention and saluted as I passed -- we were taught a very important lesson!

Troops that are engaged in constructive work do NOT stop their work and pop to attention to salute! The ones doing the work are the ones who get priority!

In any situation, even if I am the customer, I step aside and try to make it easy for anybody actually doing the hard work.
