I really enjoyed the OBC that they give you, that way you can use it on anything you want.

Cruise lines have all been tightening their sales policies for travel agents.

Unless it's a value add on they purchase from the cruise line, they are no longer allowed to offer add-on perks.

My TA still gives 5% "rebate" on all cruises and higher on escorted cruises. She also arranges extra shipboard credit on a number of sailings per year. If I want chocolate covered strawberries, I will just ask for them myself; cash is king.

Marc... I'm not certain what Regent pricing policies are. But if they allow the rebating, it's probably because of the price they charge

As you know, perhaps 3 % of the cruising public sail the luxury lines... though I probably should have specified it was the major cruise lines policies I was referring to.

You probably shouldn't have posted that

If the cruise lines happened to find out about that practice, the TA would NOT be allowed to sell for that line again.

They've become VERY diligent about that sort of thing (to the detriment of the paying passengers) , and would cut the TA's ability to sell their product very quickly. And considering there are three major corporations controlling the cruise lines these days, that would put quite a dent into their ability to do business.

Its not just my new TA ,friends of ours just received an in mail rebate from their TA .


My wife just told me that she called the advertised phone number of an online travel company and was told that their company sends post cruise rebates .

Good deal for you and your friends (if the price was the same as the cruise line's were charging).

I'm sure some travel agency do break the rule. I am amazed any agency would admit it to anyone who just happens to call them. A sure way to get caught I'd think. Any travel agent could call, and then report them.

To be honest, if I were a travel agent, there's NO WAY I would take a chance on losing my ability to do business, just to rebate $25 or $50 to a customer!

I suppose there are always some exceptions... if it was a very long time client who booked 5 or 6 cruises a year, maybe... but otherwise the risk to their business is considerable.

Back when the rules allowed discounting, I would basically insist on it. Now that they're stricter, I'd feel bad putting an agent at risk too.

I'd rather negiotiate the allowable perks.

And... I've written articles in the past, how in fact, it was the travel agents themselves that initiated the cruise lines taking the action to put the "flat pricing" in place.

I warned then, that it hurt the consumer, and for TAs to be careful what they ask for. They gave the cruise lines a green light to attract more passengers to book directly with the cruise line. And that has happened!

Travel agents don't make that much in commission on sales. There may be some added incentives on certain sailings. But on a $1000 cruise sale, their net doesn't get over about $150.

From that net, the host agency takes a percentage, and then there's associated expenses to the booking as well.

Again, the important point I believe... as a travel agent I wouldn't risky my business for a customer, and even more so, not for a irregular customer.

So, if they are rebating you more then $50.00, they are giving you more then they would for an obc? That makes no sense to me....these ta's sound very hungry for business.

Not really of interest to me. If they are doing so, they are likely going to find themselves in hot water. I don't need to do be the one reporting them.

If they are giving rebates as high as you are implying, it won't matter, because they'll be broke soon.... so either way, they won't be selling cruises for too much longer.

I don't mind a travel agent making a living, and getting paid fair value for their work. As long as they are supplying great service, and the customer is getting fair treatment, value and pricing.

Years ago, all through school, I worked in a job based largely on commission. When I made sales, I expected to earn a reasonable amount for my work.

I still expect to be paid a reasonable amount for my work. Too bad CruiseMates doesn't think my work is worth that much

Stating that this makes no sense to me, does in no way, insinuate you are making anything up. To my mind, it seems, as I said, these travel agents are hungry for business,and are willing to take a chance, that makes even less sense in these economical times. They are rolling the dice the cruise lines will not find out, the lengths they will go to get business. If, & when they do find out, they will pay the price.

I've seen cash back after your cruise on several sites in the past few months but avoided them to avoid any potential hoops you need to jump through.

Sorry... I have no idea what your point is.

The more people who see it, the more likely the cruise lines will see it, and the more likely they won't be selling cruises for too much longer (irregardless of they are large online agency or a small brick and mortar).

While you may want to drag on your point that this exists. I'm speaking only in terms of the general policies, and what's allowed and what's not.

I really could care less if they do or not exist, and do or do not advertise. That's up to the cruise lines.

I detest the cruise line's "flat pricing policies", as I believe if a business wants to set their pricing, offering discounting of their comissions, they should be allowed to.... not restricted from doing so.

In the golf business, Titelist does not allow outlets selling their equipment to discount their products below the pricing Titelist sets.
A hiuge national golf chain discounted their balls. After several months doing so, Titelist cut them off from selling ANY of their equipment.

It took many months of negotiating for them to be reinstated as a sales agent for Titelist.

Beautiful weather all weekend. I played pretty well, and won my "flight". A flight means they match players in one group of similar handicaps.

That means I am now officially the best golfer of the worst golfers at my golf club.

I received a PM from a CM person stating that on his last cruise which was in May 2012 to Bermuda he and his wife received a check for $300 after the cruise from their TA .

Re your golf game Kuki ,I googled your real name years ago and read about you .One of the reasons I joined CM is because you and I have a lot in common and I hoped one day to be able to discuss that with you .

We book Princess and Princess still allows TAs to discount so we usually save another 10 - 12% over Princess's best price. All the perks I need.

There's healthy OBC offers all over the place..10% seems standard on RCL and X
