Default TA question

A Travel agency in my area advertises that they do not work on commission . If that is correct how do they make their money ?

Well, that's a heck of a question.

I would assume they charge the customer a service fee (or call it that), rather than calling it commission. But, I wonder if they turn down the commissions the cruise lines pay

Again , I am not sure if this is true but I was once told that a TA makes 30% on a booked cruise .

This particular cruise agengy advertises on line stating they do not work for commissions and do not charge a service fee of any kind .

I'm sure travel agents world wide would be delighted to hear they get 30% commissions.

Honestly, I have no idea who supplies you with half the information you said "you were told". Guess New York is a strange place.

Travel agents commissions used to vary with the amount of business they do with the various cruise lines. BUT, in the heyday, the biggest agencies didn't make more than 20%.

Today, the vast majority are in the 14%-18% range.

As I've said before, from whatever they do make, in one way or another (normally by splitting their commissions) they have to pay the host agency they are working for. And, from what they are left with, they also have additional expenses involved in your booking; simple cost of doing business expenses, like toll free phone lines, mailing costs, etc.

Occassionally some lines, on some sailings, will offer some extra incentives to travel agents in addition to their commissions, but that still leaves their commissions WELL below 40%.

The agency stating they dont earn commissions, and don't charge service fees, must be the same agency that sends cash rebates

Since you research these agencies so thouroughly, and check prices with so many, I think for research sake you should call or email this agency and ask them how they make money doing what they say they do. Makes sense, no?

It actually reminds me of the old retail joke... I sell everything below cost, but I make up for it in volume.

Question Commission

From the point of view of an individual agent, there is a difference between the agency receiving a cruise line commission and the agent "working on commission."

In many cases, an individual agent working for an agency actually works on salary. Although the agency gets commissions, the AGENT does not. In some sense, this might imply that the agent is working for the best interests of the customer, not trying to bump sales or steer them in a particular direction to increase their own commission.

In practice an agent or an agency who does focus on increasing personal commission that way will not build up a reliable base of repeat customers. Looking out for the customer, in any line of business, is the way to success, not looking out only for yourself.

So IMAO, whether the agent works on commission or salary does not have much effect.

A couple who post on CM told me that they received a rebate post cruise .Their TA is in the DC area .
Friends of mine who live in NJ received a cash rebate after a cruise earlier this year .
On of the TA's we are considering now gives rebates post cruise ,he is in PA.
The TA who states on her website that she does not receive a commission .I personally do not care if she gets a commission or not .I am just curious .If you think this is a bubba meinser I can PM you with the name of the agency and you can read it .

I could care less. it was YOU that asked the question. I responded, and then you want to argue about it, like someone called you a liar. That simply makes no sense.

I told you, you should contact them and ask them how they make a profit, without accepting commissions from the cruise line, or charging you extra.

Simple really... you ask them, get their response, and then you can argue with them

Question Argumentative?

Wow.

21,000 posts arguing with 15,000 posts just like a couple of newbs?

Come on, guys. This is not suitable for either one of you.

Think what it looks like to newcomers like me ...
