Default Good Reminder About Passports

We're constantly telling our clients to make sure that when they are traveling to foreign countries to make sure their passports do not expire within 6 months after the end of their trip.

Here's just another reminder as to why;

How a Little-Known Passport Rule Could Ruin Your Vacation, Costing Thousands - ABC News

Please make sure you heed this advice as I would hate for you to be turned away because you were not aware of this. And keep in mind that airlines and cruise lines will not issue refunds if this happens to you and your travel insurance policy will also not cover this situation.

Interesting to see that this is at least in part due to reciprocity. I remember hearing that the Chicago Olympic bid suffered due to US travel restrictions. Also heard someone who was complaining about the cost of a visa to Brazil be told that it was a reciprocal measure.

We often don't realize how our travel is affected by our government's action in ways beyond the TSA.

Pete
Are the places listed in the article the only places that require this? What about a trip to BVI? Any restrictions there?

Robin,

A good "rule of thumb" is not to travel if your passport will expire in six months or less of YOUR RETURN date. If you are leaving for Paris on November 1 for three weeks and your passport expires on May 1 of the following year, your passport will not be valid in France.

Basically, think that your passport is only valid for 9.5 years.

This doesn't apply for your standard Caribbean cruise but it should for any other travel.

Take care,
Mike

So far, we've not been made aware of this impacting any cruises in the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Virgin Islands, Mexico, or Canada. When cruising to these places, the 6-month rule does not yet apply.

But to be on the safe side, it's always highly advisable not to press your luck.

As for reciprocity, we've witness this firsthand. When we were going on our Asian trip, we needed to obtain a Chinese visa. Cost to us; $140 per person. Cost to anyone of any other country in the world; $40 per person. The extra $100 for U.S. citizens is 100% a reciprocity penalty, as we learned talking to the people at the Chinese visa office in downtown DC.

Sometimes politics gets in the way of many parts of our lives.

Ok thanks Pete. I'm good about keeping it far up to date, someone said they thought Mexico was doing the same thing.

Mike......I understood what Pete meant....thanks......I just wasn't sure if it was the same way for places like Mexico & BVI.
