Default "alternative dinning charges"

Can someone please explain what "alternative dinning charges" as listed in the Princess booklet is? I thought we could eat where we wanted but my TA thinks this is a charge added to your bill if you do not eat in the dinning room. Help! My TA seems not to have a clue.
Thanks

Boomer,
These charges are usually in the form of 'suggested' tips and you will be given a piece of paper to sign just like those that you get when you order a drink. At least that was how it was done on the Norway.
These are "special" areas where you usually need to make reservations and they serve fare that is of a unique distinction.

Exactly right, Jim. On Princess it isn't much, about $5.00 per person.

On the Grand Princess in March the charge was 3.50 per person which you sign for after the meal. The biggest problem we had was determining what to give the main dining room staff since we only ate there twice all week. We asked the purser's desk and they seem confused but told us to tip whatever we felt correct.

Princsess only addds a $5.00 surcharge for tipping in the alternative restaurants.
It's well worth it, and quite reasonable, I think. And, you don't need to tip your dining room waiter for nights you aren't there.
