I am trying to plan our first cruise to Alaska.
Despite having 4 Caribbean cruises under my lifejacket, I seem to be an idiot about Alaska.
I am trying to find both a ship that I love and an itinerary that will max the experience. The contenders are Celebrity (never tried), Royal Caribbean (tried once) and Holland America (hit them twice). I'm mid 30's and enjoy creature comforts and amenities...but will do anything necessary to see the wildlife
Any advice?...any "don't miss" or "don't even bother" tips?
I'm a veteran of 7 Alaska cruises and wildlife is strictly hit or miss. My last cruise which was in mid-June included a trip to Denali National Park where we saw more wildlife than ever. The tour guide said we "grandslammed" which meant we saw at least one of every major animal in the park, moose, bear, elk etc. Even if you don't see the wildlife, the scenery is breathtaking. Any one of the lines you mentioned will give you an excellent Alaska cruise and all of them can provide a cruise/tour into the interior. I've sailed Princess more often than any other line. I've sailed the no longer in existence Royal cruises and I've sailed Celebrity. Next year my daughter and I will sail the new Celebrity Summit, which does a one way between Vancouver and Seward. We will spend about a week on the Kenai Peninsula after the cruise is done. Do some homework on the internet. I'd suggest booking whale watching and flightseeing online instead of onboard.
My mother and I have a hold on a Sky Suite for Summit July 26, 2002.
I am so excited! We're doing Southbound Seward to Vancouver. Our TA secured a cabin facing the shore and a late seating request. I'd love to add the tour to Denali but my company will only allow so many consecutive days off.
What do you think about the Bear Watching excursions? I heard that they sell our quickly. Have you used Celebrity's on-line booking for excursions/spa? I think it's a great feature!
