just wondering 2 things. Do cell phones work either on the ship or in the ports (western carribean on carnival victory)? Also, if my internet service provider (corporate) has an 800 # for dial in, can I use the internet without charge from my cabin on a laptop? or do you know what the charge would be if there were one?
You will likely not be able to use your cell phone on the ship, and very possibly not in port. Whether or not it works in port depends on your service provider and service available in port. As for the ship, if you're close enough to a port with service, you might be able to get a signal -- but I wouldn't count on it. Your best bet would be to buy a phone card and use it when you're in port.
In regards to the internet, you won't be able to access the internet without charges. Ship to shore calls are very expensive. It would be cheaper to go with the ship's internet provider. The rates they charge really depend on the cruiseline. You will need to check with your Travel Agent or the Cruise Line for charge information.
I'm almost entirely certain you can't use the 800 number from your cabin. Telephone fees vary from the exhorbitant to the astral aboard ship.
Your best bet is an Internet cafe on shore.
For your itinerary, the one in Key West is on Duval Street, next to the Boar's Head Saloon (I'm not sure that's the right name ... somebody will come along and correct me if I am wrong), in Grand Cayman, pass the Hard Rock Cafe on your left and it's in the building on the next corner, second floor. They are all over the place on Coz, primarily between the piers and San Miguel. They are also plentiful in Playa.
If you need to upload work, take a disk along.
As to cellphones, it depends upon your provider. A phone card is probably a better bet.
