Carnival Cruise Line is asking for our Social Security number as part of information asked for on documents. Am I obliged to give my number to them? What kind of delays would I encounter if I refused? Why do they need this information in the first place? We do have passports--they didn't even ask for those numbers. Would appreciate any light the "Mates" can shed on this dilemma. Thanks. Ten days and counting!!!!!
I have always refused to give my SSN to anyone except my employer. It is commonly used by many people for identification but according to the official position of the US Government it is not now, nor has it ever been a legal form or identification and you are not required to give it out. Some may insist and actually not do something for y9ou if they don't get it, but you are not required to ever give it out except for Social Security information purposes. I am very hard-nosed about this and don't think that people are asking for it for any evil means, but I just refuse to give it out.
