My fitness trainer of 6 months has done a great job getting me in shape for my upcoming cruise and big 4-0 birthday. I want to get him something in Nassau but I don't know what to get a 28 year old guy. He's married so I think it can't seem too intimate, like jewelry. I also don't want to get him a cheesy t-shirt or knicknack. He drinks stuff like Guinness, brandy, Bailey's and not too dry wines so I thought maybe a bottle of something that's unique to the Bahamas. He also likes to backpack and disc golf. His actual profession is graphic design and he's really good at drawing in pencil and ink. I want to spend about $30. Any ideas for me?
Also, if I find a piece of coral while snorkeling, is it illegal to keep?
Hi... I can see why you asked! The only thing that popped out at me was when you said he was an artist. Maybe you can find a small framed print or sketch by a local artist. A pencil sketch of a beach might be nice... One my favorite sourvenirs (besides an English teacup that I use almost every day) is a watercolor my mom picked up at an outdoor bazaar in Cannes. It's a small framed watercolor of a narrow backstreet with colorful houses and window boxes, and a cat in the foreground. Not your typical souvenir, but I can't look at that picture without remember the day we had there and our cruise together. I can still picture the artist.
Hey Stacy, thanks for the suggestion! I have a picture just like that from a trip to Florence, Italy that always reminds me of buying it on the street from the female artist and everything else that happened on that trip. Of course, my trainer wouldn't get all that benefit from a picture but if it was a well-done work, maybe similar to the style of his own artwork, he would probably love it.
Keep the ideas coming, especially if you're a guy in your 20s! Do you think he might like a cd of the local music? He likes to exercise to club music.
Men are so tough to buy for, especially when they aren't a boyfriend.
If you're still thinking about liquor, keep in mind that they mostly have the same stuff you can buy at your local liquor store. Nassau Royale is a local rum that might give him a "flavor" of the islands. There's also a soda called Goombay Punch that would be a unique souvenir that isn't available in the U.S. How about a rum cake? Or a book of tropical drink recipes? Or some local hot sauce? You could even make up a little gift basket when you get home with different trinkets like these.
When you exit the cruise ship, you'll have to go through a little indoor shopping mall to get to town. It's really cute and there are a lot of interesting souvenirs there. I like shopping there because the vendors aren't pushy and the prices are fixed. If you like to bargain, there's always the straw market.
