Wow! This site is fabulous!! We are leaving on our first cruise ever on April 18th. One question -- we do not use credit cards, instead we use our debit card when cash and checks are not practical or accepted. How does it work?
You can also put a cash deposit on your account! I had a debit card without the Visa logo the first time I cruised.
IMO, I won't use my main debit card for things while I'm traveling. I got a second account, "my fun account". It has a debit card that's NOT linked to my main checking account. I just transfer money into it when I need to. I feel a little safer knowing that the world doesn't have access to my main source of money.
YesÉI've read the "hold" is like $500 for 30 days. So you will be denied access to the last $500 in your checking account (that is linked to that particular debit card) for 30 days AFTER your cruise is over.
Judiekaren, I have sailed twice on Carnival and both times used my VISA check card. They did not have a "hold" on my account. I checked on the ride back to home and there was no hold AND the charges had not yet gone through. I asked Carnival ahead of time and was told they placed a hold when you board, which immediately is dropped at the end of your cruise BEFORE the final bill arrives in your cabin.
The charges for my sail and sign account appeared a few days later.
