Default Fort Lauderdale ?

Having just learned our cruise is now leaving from Miami rather than NOLA (no big surprise). I am now trying to re-arrange my air tickets. Fort Lauderdale looks more promising for getting the days and times I want but I have never landed there and gone to the Port of Miami so I have a couple of questions.
1. What are some (relatively) economical ways to get from the FL airport to the Port of Miami?
2. How far is it from FL to the Port of Miami ?
3. Anyone know any economical hotels in FLL?
Thanks for any help.

Using Priceline hotels in Miami, near the port, are normally less expensive than Ft Laud ports.

Nice 3 star hotels in downtown Miami can be had for $40 + in Miami, in Ft Laud for the same quality will be $70 and up.

If you are coming in pre cruise, I'd rent a car in Ft. Laud, drive to Miami (about 45 minutes or so depending on traffic). There are no charges for one way drop offs on rentals in Florida.

We stayed at Comfort Suites in Fort Lauderdale. Very nice Transportation to the airport and port in Ft. L. Never have left from Miami, but it is about a 45 min. drive.
