Plan on doing a LOT of shopping

Seriously, I don't know the answer, but I wouldn't get a new credit card just to shop overseas. I typically use either Visa or Amex and I have never seen any outrageous service charges on either one.

You could run up your AMEX and then refuse to pay it off - then they should offer you $300 just to close your account. That seems like a pretty good deal to me.

We like our Capital One - No Hassle Rewards card. We earn miles for each purchase and they don't charge a currency exchange fee. You accumulate miles/points and redeem them for anything travel related. We use it instead of our ATM bank card for everything and pay it off each month. I just redeemed my points for our last hotel and 1 airfare getting over $300 off our bill. I still have over 30 days to earn points for the other airfare. Our hotel is also a Hilton brand, earning points towards a free hotel in Europe. One trick we learned; Sam's Club doesn't take Visa so we go to WalMart, buy a gift card for the month and use it at Sam's. Now we earn points. We also know the billing closing date and budget big purchases/expenses and buy now and pay next month. This might not work for us but for us it's great.
