Hi. This is probably a stupid question, but will I save money on airline tickets to a cruise port that is closer to my home than I would to one that is farther? In other words, are airfares really based on distance at all?

Yes and no:
Airline pricing is a hard thing to figure out but "generally" if you travel between two hub airports, that are close together, you will pay less. It is really dependent on popularity of the destination, day of week, length of stay and other factors.
HOWEVER, you can often find less expensive airfare between Los Angeles and Miami than you can from Boston to Miami.
Just look for the cruise you like the most and then price airfare to see the difference. If the air pricing is within your budget. Book it.
Take care,
Mike

MIke is so right..I live in Boston, and getting to Florida lately, the rates are crazy....this is a snowbird route, and it used to be so reasonable..
One thing to take into consideration is perhaps, flying into an airport close to the cruise port..For example, if you are cruising from Miami or Lauderdale, you could see if flights into Palm Beach airport are cheaper...Remember adding in the cost of a shuttle or rental car, before you book.. the cost of flying right into the port you need could be cheaper the drive down 95 is a straighr shot, so an easy drive. Comparison is the key here.

Thank you both very much for your help. Yes, picking the cruise first is certainly the way to go. I would be flying out of Minneapolis, or else out of our local airport and then out of Minneapolis. I live 400 miles from the nearest major airport.
