Smile How many $$$$$$$$$$

I was just sitting here thinking, then a thought popped into my head. How much do you think it cost to build a new ship like the Royal Princess? A 100 milion it has to be alot more! How long until they get a return on their money? And I also wonder What the life of the ship is. Someone must be making some $ seems they are building some new ships!

You were close.
Just over 650 million.
10 -15 years to pay the bank loan.
First dry dock required in year 3 for minor refurbishment.
Second dry dock required in year 5 for more serious work.

Life of the ship will be around 15 years for the first owner.
Total life will be around 18-20 years.

According to Princess, the cost is going to be approx. 155,000 EUROS per lower berth. There are 3600 lower berths planned. Converted to US dollars that's going to be over 3/4 of a billion dollars.

They certainly won't recoup their investment in 3 yrs. If the cruise lines could do that they'd be dropping a new ship in the water every week, and every entrepeneur in the world would be building cruise ships.

Most ships are taken into dry dock every 2-3 years. The degree of work and refurb done during each of those dry docks varies. Plus their is ongoing maintenance, and refinishing and refurnishings going on all the time (even when the ship is at sea ) to some degree or another.

A little off topic but here goes .I watched a show on the history chanel it was about the worlds largest fishing ship.It is working up in Alaska fishing for Pollock and is American owned. Any way they said the ship does not make one penny of profit off the fish fillets that the sell!Which most are sold to Mcdonalds. They do not waste anythig the scrapes are made into animal food right on board. The onlly profit is from the selling of the fish eggs to Japan which go for high dollars ALL the money from the fillets go back into running the ship and paying the crew.I just found that amazing, must cost alot of $$ to run a large ship of any kind cruise,Fishing, freight Research.
