What happens when prices drop?
Hello! We're booked on a Mediterranean cruise on Princess in Nov. We paid in full over a month ago. I see tonight the online price has dropped $700ea. Wow! Planning on calling Princess. What can I expect? May 8th, 2013 01:19 AM

First, this is why you should always book with an agent so you can let them take care of all this for you and you don't have to hassle with it or worry about it. They will also be able to tell you if the lower rates that are connected to any specials you may or may not qualify for. Plus, agents don't charge anything for their service and have alot of information and advice to offer, so it makes sense to utilize them whenever possible. And if you book it directly with the cruise line and have any problems, who do you think they represent? It's always good to have someone on your side.

But in this particular case, since final payment has not yet been made, it should not be a problem getting your fare reduced, provided the reduction is not a special for 'new bookings only', in which case they may give you a hard time about. But this far out, I doubt that would be a problem.

Always keep your eyes open because you never know when a special will reduce your fare. Then jump on it right away because it could be a very limited special.

Call Princess first thing in the morning and see if you can get a refund, upgrade or On Board Credit because of the price drop.

If you booked through a travel agent then the agent will need to negotiate with Princess. Princess will only speak with the booking agent. It's stupid but that's how it works. If you booked directly with Princess then you can handle everything yourself.

If Princess will not give you the lower price, on board credit or an upgrade then cancel the reservation and re-book at the lower price.

I wholeheartedly agree with snoozeman on this one; you never want to pay in full before the final payment due date. Cruise lines hate to refund any money!

However, even though you have made final payment, the final payment due date has not yet arrived, so you should be okay. If they're not willing to refund the money, as was stated earlier, you can always cancel, get a full refund, and then rebook your cruise (but this time use an agent).

Word of advice since we're on the subject (this may not apply in this specific case, but thought I'd point it out anyway); if a special is offered 'for new bookings only' and the cruise line will not re-price your cruise, so you decide to cancel a current reservation then rebook it just to get the special, take notice that in the fine print this is not allowed. The cruise lines run a software package to catch people who do this and the discount rate will be disallowed and then automatically be changed back to the original amount. (There are tricks of the trade to avoid getting caught.) This type of practice use to be more prevalent years ago, but we haven't seen alot of it lately, so it's not as much of a problem as it use to be.

Called at the end of last week. Princess says no worries. $1400 to be refunded. Got an email yesterday confirming the new price, $1400 less, I will check with the bank Monday for the refund. All's well.....

I just noticed the same think happening for my cruise, Royal Carrabean! In my case, less than half for the new price! have emailed my agent here in Australia to see what she can do, only thing is, she is the third agent to handle my booking since originallly set out to book, first two left the agency, but I hope the follow through is still there. At the new prices, what I originally paid for an inside cabin, would now almost pay for a balcony cabin, about another $147.00 aust, (each) at minimum I expect an upgrade! I do like Princess more than alot of cruise lines when it comes to stuff like this - they're easier to work with.

Just this week, I had a couple who booked a 10-night Alaskan cruisetour and the price went down tremendously. They made their final payment a month ago, yet Princess repriced it for me and they are being given a $2,008 refund!

Most cruise lines would not have done this.

I wish the airlines would refund moneys instead of the almost useless vouchers they off when they have a price drop. I had 2 expire a few months ago, would much rather have my moneys returned....Just leaves a sour taste in my mouth when this happens, so nice to hear Princess is one of the good guys. Great PR, IMHO.

JTO - a Cruise Enthusiast - 7 Cruises and counting
I just had a similar problem with Princess which was resolved very easily through my Princess Travel Agent. Our Cruise is in September 2013, and the price dropped for all Cabins so much that a Mini-suite became less expensive than the Premium Balcony Cabin we had originally booked. Princess let us switch Cabins to a Mini-suite and we put $800 into our pockets. Perhaps that's because we had not paid the final payment; it's due later this month. Whatever the reason this time, I was pleased.
I wasn't so pleased when the same thing happened several times in 2012 with Cunard. If only because of that I will never travel Cunard again!
