Going on my first cruise in less that 3 week on the Carnival Fantasy out of Port Canaveral. Looking for some recommendations on what shore excursions to take as we will be spending day or so in Nassau.
If you have time, be sure to go over to Paradise Island and visit Atlantis, its something to see, loved the aquarium/dig, never saw anything like it before. You can do a ship excursion or just go there and pay for the tour, you can take a regular taxi or the water taxi. Also, walking and shopping in town is nice, there is the straw market to see as well, have fun!
The Atlantis is something to see as already mentioned but if you have more time, you should book an excursion to either swim with the dolphins or just go into the water with them. This is unique and a lot of fun!
Personally I would stay far away from the Straw Market - unless pushy sales people are your thing. My friend and I went to the Blue Lagoon and had a great time! They have sooo much to do there, and it's very relaxing.
The Blue Lagoon is a Carnival-owned Island - so if you're sailing on Carnival you can definetely do this! Its about a 5 hour excursion and it costs about $40.00 (I think). This includes the 40 minute boat ride (there is a Calypso-type band on board and free rum punch along with other assorted drinks, but those you have to pay for). The island has a Dolphin Encounter and a swimming with the sting rays and snorkeling. We opted for the snorkeling and it was great! Although, I got a mouthful of salty ocean water and nearly got sick. There are many different water toys you can take out in the lagoon also - some you have to put a deposit down for though - and there are plenty of hammocks stringed up around palm trees that are great for lounging around. Have a great time!
We were on the NCL Sea last year and spent a day in Nassau.
The day worked out great. Before we left we book a trip online with Barefoot Sailing in Nassau - they offer a sail and snorkel trip that is very reasonably and fun. I don't snorkel and still loved it. We got back from the trip around noon. We walked over to the straw market (hot - hot - not much to see but is an experience ) Went back to the boat - ate on the ship - showered - took a cab over to Atlantis - since is was after 5 there was no charge for the underwater area. We played in the casino - walked around and then took a cab back to the ship.
Last year I took a "pirates and forts" tour with HAL. Since it was raining off and on the whole day, that dry bus sure felt nice. It includes a Museum of Caribbean pirates and 2 18th century forts( Ft Fincastle and Ft. Charlotte). At fort Fincastle, there are some hand carved steps which were numbered for each year of Queen Victoria's rein. There are several other late 1700's landmarks in Nassau which does give the city ambience.
