Default Recommended jungle walking footwear

We are taking the Belize cave tubing excursion with Nacho and Cynthia next week. We understand that we walk for 35 to 45 minutes through the jungle to the river. It was recommended to wear an old pair of runners as they would be getting wet. I would prefer to wear my open toed sandals. The sandals are the type that secure firmly to your feet.

Is the trail suitable enough to wear the sandals?

Thanks for any advice!

Don't want to scare you but, my brother in law came home with a parasite in his foot after wearing sandals in the jungle on a cruise excursion (not Belize.....). The medication to get rid of it made him sicker than the parasite! For this reason, I would stick with the recommendation to wear shoes. (maybe you could pack an old pair that could be tossed when you're done???)

Will be doing the same cave tubing excursion in Belize. Talked to people who did the cave tubing and they all recommend taking old sneakers or what my wife and I plan on taking is water shoes. We can use them elsewhere like on beaches or other excursions.

I have found some sea-to-shore sport shoes in the Lands End catalog that I'm planning on getting for my cruise. They look like tennis shoes but are made of mesh so that you can wear them in and out of the water. You might want to check these out. They cost 29.50/pr.

We wore our water shoes. Just make sure there's no sand left in them from the beach or you'll get blisters.
