Default El Yunque and Old San Juan - Time for both?

Our flight arrives at 1:00 pm and we need to be on a cruise ship by 9:00 pm. In those 8 hours is it possible to see some of El Yunque and still get back in time to see the highlights of Old San Juan? If so, what is the best way to get to the rainforest and back and roughly what is the cost? We'd like to do both, but if the time crunch makes that inpractical I'd hate to shortchange both by trying to do too much.

It would be a tight squeeze to try to do both. The shops in Old San Juan close at 5 pm.
i would figure at least 4 hours to do the rainforest- this includes your travel time. It takes a good hour to get to the forest(from the pier) and a good tour will take at least 2 hours.
I would look into doing a ships pre-cruise tour to the rainforest, its just easier, you don't have to worry about your luggage.
If you just want to wander around Old San Juan than you best bet would be to grab a cab at the airport, go to the pier, check you baggage, drop-off your carry-on in your stateroom, get a bite to eat and then grab a taxi into Old San Juan- and just wander around, its great, you can also head up to Fort El Morro from Old San Juan - very interesting- the fort overlooks the harbor, watch all the comings and goings, and its windy up there, very popular place to fly kites.
You can't go wrong either way, you just need to pick one.
FYI - you have to plan dinner time in there and you must be back on the ship at least 1 HOUR before sailing time.

Hi Dlm,My first question is which pier your ship will be docked? If it is docked at the Pan Am pier you will need to take a cab either place. If you are docked at Pier 4,you will be right at Old San Juan.
If you are at pier 4 you can take a free shuttle right off the pier[even if you take a cab there]when you come off the pier go to the left towards the Wynndom hotel you can take it up to the fort and get off and look around. When finished get back on the shuttle on the way back it goes into OSJ and then you can see it.When you get back to to begging point, you can walk back into OSJ on your own.Total time would be about 2 hours or less.
