Can you trust your Cabin Steward?

I think I have found that you have to obtain a key from your Steward for your safe. I'm not sure my girlfriend will feel comfortable leaving money in there when someone else can get into it.

I have never been on a ship where you had to get a key from the steward to open your safe. On Carnival, you can use your sail / sign card or any credit card--- On some of the other lines, you can simply use your own combination of numbers, ( exp. 1234 )

Re: Can you trust your Cabin Steward?

Just went on the Holiday 4-19-04. Had an inside cabin on the upper deck. In order to use the safe, all you have to do is put in 4 numbers for it to close, and open. You do not use yur sail & sign card as on other Carnival ships. Also, you will get a separate coded key for the cabin door, the sail & sign card does not act as your key on the Holiday. I would assume all the safes on this ship would work the same way.

Have a great cruise. I did!

Re: Can you trust your Cabin Steward?

Most comments have been NOT to use your Sail & Sign card but a credit or debit card that you always have with you..... The safe will be open, just put your goodys inside, close the door & swipe the card to lock.... We kept our cellular, extra cash etc. in the safe...

To answer the original question. The room steward does not have the ability to open the safe in your room. Should you happen to not be able to access your safe for any reason whatsoever a supervisor from housekeeping would be sent to your room to open the safe with a master key/card devise and you will have to sign for theat being done.

Use the safe, I would not trust leaving any valuables out.
I am sure they are nice stewards, but better to be safe than
sorry. I keep money, cell phone, and jewerly in safe.

Re: Can you trust your Cabin Steward?

We were just on the Jubilee and it did require getting a key from our room steward in order to use the small safe.

There are times when your room steward is cleaning your cabin where he/she might have to run down the hall for something. It's those times that concern me. When our door is open to anyone - if they are quick enough. So our most valuable items do get put into the safe. We've had safes that have had key pads to set your own code, key locks, and magnetic strip locks. I don't know that I'd use my sail and sign card for my safe....what if you lost your sail and sign card...although it's difficult to tell your cabin number. These are just precautions. We've never had any reason to not trust our cabin steward....after all if anything comes up missing they will be the ones to get the blame.
Most are honest....the precautions are...just in case.

By the way...on the key safes....there seems to be only one key...and you are warned that if you lose it you will be paying $40 for it's replacement.

Question (kind of relates to the topic)..Does the room steward have a master key for all of his/her rooms?

Re: Can you trust your Cabin Steward?

They sure do have a master key for the room, otherwise they would nt be able to clean it.

If you are not comfortable using credit/debit card -- your drivers license will work if it has the stripe on the back. Which I believe they all do now days :-)

You have to go pay your deposit at the Purser's desk. I wouldn't use my sail-n-sign card to open the safe.

Re: Can you trust your Cabin Steward?

If you have multiple credit card, just remember which one you used to lock the safe, because you will have to use the same on to unlock it. It was kind of a pain if my husband locked it and then he was on the other side of the ship if I needed to open it!!!

Re: Can you trust your Cabin Steward?

Deb is right. I too just got off the Holiday and have sailed her 3 times and the safes are any 4 digit code you put in then you hit the star key to lock. To open you reenter the 4 digit code. On the Inspiration it was a card with a magnitic strip. Some of the ships are different regarding safes. But as Deb and I seen, Roynala is going on the Holiday. It's important that cruisers know all ships are not the same and it's important to get our fellow cruisers accurate information. Enjoy your cruise Roynala

Re: Can you trust your Cabin Steward?

The safes are different on the newer ships. Old ones used a 4 digit code and the newer ships use any card with the black stripe on the back.....even a grocery card will work. BUT you never get a key from the steward......he may have an over-ride to get into it if was left locked from previous guests ( we had that happen), but as soon as you use another card it will change. I believe they have to have the purser come and do an over-ride for the safes. NEED a witness to open them otherwise.

Ok, you've got my curiousity now. What is the drawback to using your sail and sign card versus a credit card for securing the safe?

Re: Can you trust your Cabin Steward?

If you are on a ship that uses the S&S card as the door key then if someones gets your card they could get into your room and clean out the safe.

Just a specualtion though don't know for sure.

Thanks Stacowgirl....................I'm sure looking forward to the cruise on the Holiday. I'm glad you cleared the air regarding the safe's on the Holiday.

Re: Can you trust your Cabin Steward?

The safes that use a magnetic striped card (credit, debit, AAA, grocery, library, etc) also have instruction on them on how to use more than one card to open safe. So if hubby has one card and wifey another, then one can lock the safe and the other can open it. I don't recall the exact metodology, but the instructions are on the safe.
