Default The San Diego Port

I'm thinking of sailing on the Spirit out of San Diego March 1st -9th. I would be flying out from Ohio on the 1st. Is the port close to the airport? If the ship is scheduled to get back at 7am, would I have time to catch an 11am flight back home on the 9th. I would appreciate any information on this and any about the cruise itself. Thanks!

The airport and the port are all of 10 minutes apart. The ship may very well arrive at 7am, but you are not getting off at 7am. Plan on more like 9 to 930am to get off the ship. That would not give you enough time to make a 11am flight given current security etc.

Thanks PapaBill. The flight out I was looking at is actually scheduled to leave at 11:30 am, but I'm still concerned that I would miss the flight. Have you taken this particular cruise (Mexican Riviera)

if the flight leaves at 11:30 are you not required to check in 2 hours in advance? I think you might be cutting it a little close.

I have read from others that you can get early debarkation if you carry off your own luggage at this port. We have done this in Miami once, a little bit of a pain with all your luggage, but it does get you off the ship early.

Thanks for the info! I pulled the trigger and the mrs. and I are going on the Spirit March 1st through the 9th. We got a balconey cabin mid ship on the Empress deck, so we are already excited. I haven't booked airfair yet because I'm still not sure about the timing of everthing. Does anyone know of a reasonable hotel/motel close to the port that I might consider pre or post cruise.

You'll be fine for 11:30. I live in SD and have flown quite a bit in and out of the airport. It's a pretty well organized airport...and the only time I've had to check in more than an hour previous was right after the 9/11 attacks. Actually, I'm surprised that I'm able to get in and out sooo quickly for being a fairly good sized city. It's really close to the port, the road at the port actually leads you straight to the airport. I took a cruise out of San Diego and since we lived in town, we were the last ones to disembark...and even at that we were off at around 10 am. If you have an early flight, you'll be one of the first off.

But I have to say....it's a shame you can't stay a bit....and get a double vacation!

Enjoy your cruise and hope you enjoy the city!

Pastor Don, here is the link to the San Diego article I wrote last month:

Also, for tour info, be sure and check out the Mexico board here. The Spirit is a great ship -- been on her twice.

Harry

Thanks Harry! I enjoyed the information you shared and wish I had more time to stay in San Diego. Our you familiar with the Mexican ports I will be visiting on the Spirit? If so any can't miss tours or sights I need to check out?
