Quick question on calling home while on the cruise...do international phone cards work and are we able to call home from the ship or just while in ports? I've never been out of the country before so I'm not sure how this works.
You can call home from the ship, but not with an international phone card. Be warned, however, that the ship-to-shore calls are very very expensive...something like $10.00/minute. I've never tried the international cards from a port, but I imagine that they work. Some people have reported being able to use their cell phones from some ports, but that can also be expensive, depending on your plan. One option would be to use the internet cafe to maintain contact with home, which would be a cheaper, though still expensive, solution.
While cruising last spring we used the internet cafes to keep in touch with our kids. I think we paid something like $15 for 30 minutes, which lasted us the 5 days we were gone. It was actually nice because they could write when they had time after school, and we could write when we had time. It's not as good as actually hearing their voices, but if definitely helps fill the void.
Ship to shore calls are very expensive. 9.99 per minute. The internet cafe is a good source to stay in touch with family. You'll see alot of people using the cafe to say hi to folks back home, and to check there stock market, and there business's back home.
International phone cards work well in ports. We had a couple to use this on our last cruise. She had to call home at every port, to tell her folks about her cruise.
You can also buy phone cards at most all the ports. They are relatively cheap and are easy to use at the pay phone conveniently located at the piers.
