I just wanted to share what I heard about on the news last night. It seems that due to the hurricanes and flooding in the Dominican Republic this year there is an explosion in the mosquito population there. So far there has been about 8 or 9 reported cases of travelers contracting Malaria there. Right now there are two patients here in Canada that are on life support because of this. Most doctors are not aware of this problem , which is delaying diagnosis and treatment. So if anyone here is traveling to this area please be aware of the problem.
Yes, I am a Medical Lab.Tech and the Haematology Dpt is booming with malarial smears from people who have been to the Dom.Rep.!! I don't think they have found any-but since I am not in that Dpt I am not sure.

VALOR Jan/05-our first family cruise was great!
What's also interesting is that the American RedCross won't take a blood donation from you if you have traveled to Tulum or Chitzen Itza in the last year due to concerns over malaria. That hits a lot of people that travel to Cancun and Cozumel.
