My bf and I are thinking of taking our 2nd Carnival cruise on the Glory this July (leaving from Port Canaveral). One concern that I'm having is whether to book my flight going into Melbourne or Orlando. Which is more convenient...and ultimately cheaper? If someone has had any experience travelling to Port Canaveral I would appreciate their input
We flew into Orlando the day before. Stayed at the Airport Marriott and then took the shuttle to the ship from the airpot. I'm not sure of the cost because we did the Fly-Away program but I do know that they only charged us $100 for the hotel night. It's a nice hotel, good pool area and walking distance to some decent restaurants. If you do this, take the 9:15 shuttle from the hotel back to the airport. That way, you can get on the first shuttle that goes to the port.
I think the majority of people fly into Orlando. You can also rent a car as we do at the airport. Get in the night before, go shopping, have dinner. Get up early and drop your car off at Budget. They'll shuttle you to the port. There are tons of hotels and places to eat nearby the port.
There is no charge to be shuttled over either. This way you don't have to wait on others and their luggage. Much easier this way.
You can take the Carnival shuttle, or both Mears Transportation and Art's Shuttle offer shuttle service. We're a large family so we hired a limo service as it was cheaper for us to do that than to take the transfers.

At $50 pp for Carnival transfers flying into Orlando the day before and a car rental is probably the most econimical and least stressful way to go if you can take the extra day. I can usually find mid-size cars for about $35/day TOTAL 2 days = $70. The extra $30 pays for a Fridays or Olive Garden dinner. Only extra cost is hotel and worh not worrying about traffic during the trip between MCO & port.
