When we were on the Conquest in Jan I don't think they put a hold on mine. I bet if you give them a debit card though they will hold funds.

When you give them a credit card to charge all your purchases on, it works just like a Visa or MasterCard credit card, you will be charged for items purchased on the ship, i.e., shore excursions, tips, alcoholic beverages, etc. They don't "hold" a certain amount, the charges will appear on your next credit card statement. If you present a credit card to them that does not have any "open to buy" on the card, they will ask you for another one...the credit card you present should have credit available on it. You can check your statement when it comes in the mail to see what your available credit is. If you go to the Purser's desk and deposit cash with them, there is a minimum amount per person that you must deposit (I believe it is $250 per person for a 7 night cruise). If your purchases exceed that cash deposit before the cruise is over, you will not be able to charge anything on your Sail & Sign card until you deposit additional funds with the Purser.

I thought I read this somewhere that they put a hold of $500.00. This is the same thing that car rental companies do. So you need to make sure you have a large enough limit to support this hold and any shopping you do. So if you are looking to do some major shopping while you are on the different islands you might want to take another credit card for that.

cher 3---I think you are correct. We used a different credit card on land so that there would be no conflict with our sail & sign account.

When we went in October, we used our debit card, and they only put a hold of $200 for the both of us, and it was never charged, it was just verifying there was moolah avaliable

Have fun!

Eaky77-
I know how excited you must be about October! We are going on the Valor May 1 and I keep saying"is it May yet?" Only 25 more days to go. I think about it day and night and can barely get through each work day. Packing, shopping, and getting our suitcases ready are all I can think about!!!! The waiting is excruciating.

I always put travelers checks on my account. The only thing that Carnival puts on my charge card is my tips. $9.50 per day.

I have recently called carnival to ask this question. I am sailing June 6th. They told me they have recently changed their policy. They will only hold 50.00 for children and 200.00 for an adult for a 5 night cruise. Best thing to do is call and ask. Happy sailing!!
