Default Cruise ships in Galveston

Since it looks like Hurricane Rita is coming in around Galveston, what is Carnival going to do with the cruise ships in port?

They will do what they have to do. Move them, or take them out to sea.
If you have a cruise this week or next, stay close to your TA or cruiseline. That's all you can do.

No,I don't have a cruise. I live near Houston, and since all the other Gulfport Docks are not able to be used, and the ships cannot head back to Florida, I was just wondering where they would wait out the storm. Galveston still has the two FEMA ships sitting at the dock. Just wondering how they would escape

The following is the latest update from the Carnival Web site. There doesn't appear to be any ships viewing the web cam closest to the pier.

Tropical Weather Update

September 22, 2005 - 2:30 PM

We are closely monitoring the progress of Hurricane Rita. At Carnival, the safety and comfort of our guests and crew are our number one priority. We will navigate all of our ships at a safe distance from the storm at all times.

We have made the following storm-related itinerary changes:

The Carnival Victory September 18, 2005 departure from Miami will operate a Western Caribbean cruise to Cozumel, Grand Cayman and Ocho Rios (originally scheduled to the Eastern Caribbean).

The Fascination September 19, 2005 departure from Miami will visit Freeport and Nassau (originally scheduled to visit Key West and Cozumel).

The Celebration September 19, 2005 departure from Jacksonville will visit Freeport (replaces Key West) and Nassau.

GALVESTON ARRIVAL / DEPARTURES SATURDAY AND SUNDAY

We are currently evaluating our plans for Galveston this weekend. We do not expect to make a decision on the required itinerary changes until Friday afternoon. However, the Elation cruise on Saturday, September 24 and the Carnival Conquest cruise on Sunday, September 25 will not depart Galveston before Monday, September 26.

In addition, the Elation September 19 cruise and the Carnival Conquest September 18 cruise will not arrive back into Galveston until Monday, September 26 at the earliest. Please check back here periodically and we will provide an update as new information becomes available.

They will remove all the ships that are either there for the hurricane relief or scheduled to be there during the hurricane. Those with cruise passengers will probably go to Mobile or Tampa and those that are being leased will head to the south and Mexico coastline. They of course will not port anywhere but just wait until it is safe to return. Military ships do this all the time as in port is a very dangerous place to try and ride or any hurricane.
