Default Mexico: Calica;Playa Del Carmen

Ok guys need some help here. I've searched and searched again and haven't found much. Iam going to Key West/Calica with carnival here in about 20 days Now in Key West..no worries there I am from Florida been there many times.

Calica is my question, I know that Calica is a big gravel pit so I know we have to go somewhere else. I have been looking up places near there. I think I have narrowed it to Playa Del Carmen, I want to swim, shop (purses mainly) and go to a few bars Tequilla Barrel is one. I know everything is on 5th ave (bars/shops).

Now what about the beaches, which on do you suggest for 3 people in their 20's to go and have a good time, minding we would like to use some watercraft if available. I havent found any shore excursions that interest me because we ar trying to do everyhing in such a short time frame.

What I need to know is what is the closest nicest beach to 5th ave, and will there be taxis at the beach to take us to 5th ave, or is it within walking distance (that would be even better), We have to be back at the boat by 930-to leave at 10pm, are there taxis running that late on 5th ave, to get us back to the boat?

Any suggestions would be awesome and greatly appreciated!!

I would suggest checking out the town of Akumal, which is about 15 minutes south of the Calica Dock, just down the 307 Highway. At Akumal bay and Yal-ku lagoon you can swim and snorkel. If you don't have your own snorkeling equipment there is a dive shop at the entrance to town where you can rent, and probably even hire a guide if you would like. Akumal also has several restaurants and bars mixed in with the condominiums. You can get there by either taking a taxi or renting a car. There is also local transportation called Collectivos (White Vans) that will take you up and down the highway from Playa to Tulum for a couple of bucks a person, but you will still have to take a cab from Calica to Playa to the Collectivo pickup area. You can save some money this way, but it will take a bit more time.
And of course if you just want to hang in Playa for the day Mamitas is good, but lately there have been reports of them blasting loud techno music all day, so Playa Tukan next door is a bit quieter but also has good food and facilities.

Have fun. We'll be down to Cozumel on the 28th.

Thanks for the advice Phil&Liz although since i do like to party I don't think a quite beach would do justice for me, I did look at those websites, great information on them!

Tami..thanks also I probably will take a cab to playa, did you find any beaches near 5th ave, that were nice? And how late was your boat there? Were there taxis running around 9pm?

There are two great places near Calica, xCaret and Xel Ha. They're eco parks, and offer food, drink, beaches, snorkeling, river tubing, culture, dolphins, all sorts of stuff (but not, I think, watercraft). Both of them have web sites. We went to Xel Ha from Calica and loved it - for photos, see my Maya Riviera cruise on my site www dot MyCruiseAdventures dot com.

We also visited Tulum, from Cozumel, and it was truly an awesome place. It's got a nice little beach or two tucked under the monuments...

When you get off at Calica, take a taxi to Playa del Carmen. The taxi will cost $10 and can hold up to 4 people. They will drop you off right behind a shopping area. Just walk through the shopping area. You will see a Carlos and Charlies and a little further down (right by the beach) you will see a Senor Frog's restaurant. The beach is right there in front of you and is absolutely beautiful. 5th Avenue runs right in front of Carlos and Charlies. You can walk probably 10 blocks or so north on 5th Avenue. It has many shops and outdoor restaurants. (Actually, you can walk farther down 5th, but most of the shops are right there.)

Tulum is also beautiful. If you are adventurous, you can take a Servicio Collectivo van to Tulum. The SC vans are located a block or two west of the bus station (which is on 5th Avenue). Tell the driver you want to be dropped off at Tulum. He will let you off on the main hightway at the Tulum sign. It is a 10 minute walk to the entrance to the ruins. We paid $4.50 a person to get into the ruins. We paid, I think, $2.50 each to ride the Servicio Collectivo van. After touring Tulum and walking down the steps to the ocean (breathtakingly beautiful), we left and walked to the main highway where a Servicio Collectivo van was waiting to take people back to Playa del Carmen. The whole trip cost the two of us about $20.

Have a wonderful time. You will love Playa del Carmen and Tulum!!!

Ditto on Playa del Carmen. The beach right at the ferry landing is also beautiful.

I can't decide what to do there either. I looked into Xcaret but it seemed pretty pricey to get in. Tulum maybe but I think spending the day partying on the beach in Playa could be alot of fun (but 9 hrs worth?) I could do Tulum early and then party later. I dunno. Maybe if I meet some other singles it'll help me decide to tag along with them.

We went to Xcaret but not through the ship so we could leave when ever we wanted. It was wonderful if your really into nature. Swimming there was relaxing and excellent. After that we caught a cab to Playa and stopped in at Senor Frogs when sat at this one place right on the beach and just enjoyed the rest of the day.

I thought the price for Xcaret was worth it. $10 cab ride to there from the ship and $10 from Playa back to the ship. Cabs were plenty and the drivers were nice.

You could easily do both. I would go to Tulum first (as early as possible), and then back to Playa del Carmen to relax on the beach until time to go back to the ship. There is also a beautiful beach at Tulum. Many people wear their bathing suits under their clothes and swim there. Have a great time. You WILL LOVE Playa del Carmen and Tulum!!

Libragirl

P.S. If you found 3 other people or so, you might also check on sharing a cab to Tulum and catching the Servicio Collectivo van back to Playa del Carmen when you are finished at Tulum. The taxi would probably be expensive, but if you had 3 other people it wouldn't be too bad.

You sure that wasn't 110 Kilometers per hour? That'd be about 66 miles per hour...

Check out www dot playa dot info. It's the best website out there for Playa Del Carmen info. There are great beaches everywhere and great beach clubs. Mamitas is a great party beach club. They will serve drinks and food to you on the beach.

Taxi's run until the wee hours of the night so getting back to the ship is no problem.

I honeymooned in Play and will be going back next year. You will love it!

On one of our recent trips to Cozumel, the taxi driver we had was apparently mad at someone. We got in the car, and I thought he was going to wreck us before we got out of the parking lot. I wanted to tell him to stop and let us out, but my husband said not to. We managed to make it to the Forum safely, but it was a scary ride!!!!

They should drive safely but I can understand that they do the same trip a hundred times a day and the more trips they take, the more money they make. They can't afford to take any more time than necessary. Who knows how little their piece of the fare is. For me, every cab ride is uncomfortable so I avoid them whenever I can but sometimes it's the only way.
