Default My first upcoming cruise just got exponentially better....

as my father told me as an 8th grade graduation gift for my son, he's paying for our cruise (including 2 hotel nights, 1 day car rental and excursions!). Of course I'll give my son a couple hundred and he won't have to be restricted to only $10 souvenirs. I love my dad!

I got sweet tweet for finishing junior high. Nothing, noda, zilch, zip...well, I did get a passing grade into high school-which starts in grade 9 in the province I live in. Now for graduating high school I thought I scored pretty good. My folks splurged and spent $750 on a stereo--with a record player since CD's weren't available in 1987. I would have keeled over if my grandparents paid for me to go somewhere......I got $100 from both grandmothers for when I graduated high school...a cruise would have been a total bonus....

Heck, my father had to die and leave my mom fairly comfortable before I could go for another vacation-a cruise-15 years after the first cruise!

well, my dad's turning 84 in September and not interested in remarriage, my mom remarried years ago. they recently got a big payoff when a building on Sheridan road in Chicago was sold, they had bought a share early in their marriage. So they were each able to help me out with some dental work I needed, pay off the few thousand I had in credit card debt and medical bills. The rest they are investing so they can have the interest supplement their social security, and leave the bulk of the money as a nice inheritance to leave me and my 2 siblings.

I was finally able to afford a cruise this year, but that money will instead go into the bank so I can continue building up some emergency fund money.

I think that's a great thing to do - with any chunck of money, pay off bills, put the rest into stable investments so you can live off the income and let the money continue to grow, then leave it to your heirs.

Again, this is a short cruise totalling $1,500 with the 2 days of excursions and 2 hotel nights and a car rental for a day, so it's not like a $5,000 suite cruise on one of the more expensive lines that he's paying for.

as for adoption, he actually adopted me when he married my mom, when I was 2 years old. My birth father thought it was the right thing to do at the time, though he regretted it later on.

I'm sure part of his joy is seeing your (and your son's) reaction to his generous gift. What a guy!

yes my dad is wonderful, and he knows how much of a struggle it's been for me and my son, and the difficulties my ex has been over the years. I know he really wants us to have a really great vacation away together as mother and son.
