Default Question for non smokers.....

Question for non smokers..... How do you find the cabin rooms? Stale and old smoky or fresh and clean smelling? From reading this forum for over a year now, they all have said that smoking IS ALLOWED in the cabins. That most definitely alarms us big time. Other than second hand smoke it's self the only other worse thing is the stale musty smell of smoke in a hotel room that has been smoked in time after time. Are the cabins the same? Is there the slightest smell of stale old smoke?

The lovely Mrs. Jones (Vita) and I are both former smokers, and are both quite aware of any smokey, stinky, smells. We've sailed a lot, and have yet to have a cabin that we have found to be objectionable. I don't know what they use, (if anything) to freshen them up, but we've just not found the cabins to be a problem. (some of the bars, and the casino, yes). In any case, I wouldn't worry about a smokey cabin. I doubt very seriously that you'll find it a problem.

Have a great cruise,

Ken

Out of 20+ cruises, we only had a problem once...on the Carnival Fascination. We must have had pretty heavy smokers in our OV room, it was horrible. They usually do a very good job of spraying and cleaning but this room reeked of smoke. We tried to change our room but they were totally booked. We asked our Room Steward to shampoo the carpeting, remove all bedding and replace with new, etc., but it only improved the smell a tiny bit. I have horrible allergies and had to cover my head with a shirt to sleep. Thank goodness it was only a three night cruise, we stayed away from the room as much as possible. After that experience, I always book a balcony room, at least you can open the door and air out the room. This happened to us once at a Disney resort, after specifically booking a non-smoking room we were given a smoking room but we were able to check out and find another hotel room....hard to do that on a ship.

I (Phil) am a non smoker but Liz does smoke.

I have not noticed that the rooms are overly smelly. I know they make some canned stuff that "absorbs" smells in a room but that may take time and wouldn't do on a 3 or 4 day.

The casino is most definately smoke filled !!

We have a balcony on out next cruise so Liz will be lighting up out there.
She WILL NOT be throwing that cig butt overboard, however!!! I thought I had read that thats how the fire aboard another ship started. She usually keeps a can or water bottle half full of water to drop the butts in.

The cabin stewart on the Victory told my mom, who somkes, that smoking is NOT allowed in the cabins because it is a fire hazard, but that the balcony is smoking allowed (of course, don't throw the butts over the balcony--a fresh ashtray was there everyday).

I don't smoke--the only sensible person in my immeidate family (and the black sheep--I'm educated and have good judgement). I didn't find the cabin to smell at all and I am senstive to the smell of smoke. The casino didn't bother me too much because I was in there early enough and if a smoker came by I'd cashout and move on....lots of machines to play *BG*. Most serious gamblers go late into the night, I prefer early afternoon-early evening gambling to avoid the crowds and get the machines I want *BG*

Agreed, it was in the evenings that I couldn't go in there.

We just returned from the Eastern Carribean cruise on the Miracle. I was always under the impression that the cabin was non smoking. Well, the people in the cabin next to ours smoked anytime they were in the room and I was nauseous from the smoke that seeped into our room.

How was the smoke able to seep into your room? Connecting door? Balcony door? Hole in the wall?

The smoke was strongest in the bathroom so maybe through the openings where the pipes were. And the walls aren't all that thick so I'm sure it seeped in through those too.

My DH and I are both non-smokers, and he is very intollerant of smoke. He has never complained of any odor in our cabin. I usually take an air freshener for the bathroom, just in case there is an ordor, but normally, there is no problem.

yeah, in my dad's apt building he keeps plastic taped up on the air vent in his bathroom as smoke seeps in from a neighbor. This is where I can see some bubble wrap and duct tape coming in handy, for those pipe!! I'll put that back on my packing list!

Phew! Smokers not only smell like crap they make everyone else suffer too. [

This is incorrect. There are no non-smoking cabins. Smoking is allowed in the cabins, on the balconies, on one side of the outside areas, and in half of some of the lounges. The staff use a spray to get rid of the odor. The name I've heard mentioned is "Ozium". We've never smelled smoke in any cabin.

My husband and I are very sensitive to cigarette smoke - anywhere.
Only once, on a Carnival ship, have we had a problem with not only smoke, but a horrible "B.O" smell in our cabin. One quick call and complaint to housekeeping, and they came in with some cleaning machine, and voila! Smell gone!

WHY cant smokers just go outside and smoke. I am a smoker myself and I smoke outside . I think that all cabins should be smoke free.

This is where Carnival leaves a gray area (and I think it does it on purpose).

In the Capers every day, you will find the following announcement.
(This one is from a Fantasy Caper in March)

SMOKING AREAS
Guests are welcome to smoke in the following areas:
Cleopatra's, Club 21 Caisno, Cat's Lounge, Electricity Disco, Majestic, Lido Deck Main Pool (starboard side) and Verandah Deck Fwd/Aft. Cigar smoking is only permitted in the Majestic Lounge or on open decks.

This is posted in all the Capers every day. They don't say "this is a list of "public areas that you can smoke". They say that it is allowed in the following areas. You will never see cabins (or balconies for that matter) listed anywhere. So if a Cabin Steward tells you no smoking in the Cabin, technically they are correct according to Carnival's own rules listed every day in the Capers.

Now, back to reality, do people smoke in their cabins? Yes. Does Carnival say anything? No.

So why doesn't Carnival list cabins as one of the "following areas"?

One reason and one reason only. They are trying to avoid liability should a fire result in someone smoking in their cabin.

Should a fire happen in a cabin, all Carnival has to say is that the passenger was smoking in a nondesignated area....so Carnival is not liable.

Personally, I don't think that would hold up in court...but who knows.
