Default SunSCREAM!

I need some advice on a good sunscreen before our cruise (in less than 3 weeks). I have some generic stuff that is white, and you have to keep rubbing it in FOREVER until it finally turns clear. This is driving my husband crazy, since I called him the abominable showman (he's 6'8" and was all white - I thought it was funny).

I bought a Banana Boat brand 50spf spray this morning for $9, and used it at the beach. It lasted long enough to apply to five people once. Not very economical.

If anyone has suggestions for high SPF, good sunscreen, I would love to hear from you!

Thanks

Go to WalMart and buy a brand called Ocean Potion. I live by this stuff...will not use anything else. My skin is very pale and sensitive and if I use anything else I have to wait literally 30 minutes inside before stepping out (even into shade) or it feels like my face is on fire. With Ocean Potion I can keep applying it and it never hurts, and it lasts. It's like $4.96 or so for a big bottle (much better priced than Banana Boat) and it smells like an orange creamsicle. Every friend I have taken on a cruise now uses nothing else!

We use Bullfrog Original Surfers formula. SPF 36. It's waterproof and sweatproof and lasts hours in the water.
We live in TX, and this stuff stays on both in the water and when you're sweating in the sun it doesn't run and sting your eyes.
I ordered it from amazon.com, $15 for two 5oz each bottles. You can get it at pretty much any large chain store, there is a list at their website.

Ooo, he should have been tanning a little bit. Just keep covered with clothing.

I did way to much tanning in my 20's so now I see a dermatologists every six months.

He told me to check that the sun tan lotion I buy has an expiration date. Most do not have one, but some do. He claims that the good ones have ingredients that expire.

I have had this discussion here before. Most people do not agree, but he is the one with the degree on the wall that gets paid lots of money every six months to see me naked.

Linux you are one hundred percent correct. Watch the expiration dates. Sunscreen lotions and sunblocks sold in dollar stores and discount stores are usually expired and you can see the manufacturing lot date on the bottom. I have made this mistake many times until someone told me to watch the dates imprinted on the bottom of the bottles. The Ocean Potion line is an awesome brand. Their aloe sunburn gel is just the best but hopefully no one will need that if they are watching how much sun they are getting.

I got a fantastic 70 SPF sunblock by Neutrogena at Wal-Mart for my trip. It worked very well, I an very light and I didn't burn at all, just got a tinge of color.

How long did it last between applications and did it fair well in the water? Thanks, Carla

Carla,

As I am very very pale, I always put it on every 30 miinutes to an hour anyway. But one of my friends that went with me actually has color and she didn't put it on nearly as much. She did put it on after getting out of the water because salt water takes everything off, no matter what brand.

I'm sorry I can't be more specific! But I can tell you that after using Banana Boat for years then discovering Ocean Potion it is a much better sunscreen, lasts longer, and is cheaper.

Here is a link to their website, hope it helps

I agree totally with the Ocean Potion #50. It's the only brand I've found that works well for me. I reapply after being in the water a while. Otherwise, I have found it last a long time without reapplying.

I'm a big fan of the Neutrogena SPRAY ON lotion that comes in a can. Its sweat proof and relatively water proof as well. I would recommend re-applying after swimming anyway. There is VERY little rubbing in and it covers your ears and such without the hassle of rubbing and rubbing..

You can get it in the SPF 30 or 45.

I bought some Banana Boat spray on suntan lotion because I am going alone this time and I figure I can reach back and spray the back of my arms and shoulders so they don 't burn.

I have a problem with my skin, I can slather on 45 SPF 20 minutes before I go out in the sun and get a blotchy red sunburn in under an hour. It happens all the time when I use sunscreen. If I go without, I burn, but I burn slower. I don't know what it is about my skin, but it seems to burn easier with sunscreen, but it is only in the past few years that it started to do that.

I don't anticipate I will be spending a lot of time in baking in the sun because I can't seem to sit still for longer than one hour. Over one hour and I can usually find many other fun things to do so I get up go!

Thanks to everyone who responded! I ended up ordering Ocean Potion directly from their website. I went to our closest Wal-Mart and the clerk had never heard of that brand name (?).

We'll see how it works...
