Default I’m going on a cruise and the wife doesn’t know!

Why? It’s a surprise cruise for her 50th birthday! We did several cruises in the late 80s and early 90s with the last one about 15 years ago. Until now, I’ve been resistant being gone a week without contact with home and business.

My youngest daughter (18) told me 'You had better do something special, mom’s expecting something big’. I had thought of booking a penthouse in Reno for four or five days, but looking at the cost of the room there and $$ for gambling, a cruise is a better deal by far.

So I booked her a suite on the Pride (4228). I just hope I don’t blow it by talking about something I read here.

Looks like big changes on board since we last sailed. Have the Mexican ports improved since from the late 80s or are they about the same?

Lots of good information here, glad I found you all.

Steve,

What a wonderful birthday surprise for your wife. She will love it. If you are interested, Carnival also offers a deal where they will decorate your cabin for birthdays, anniversaries, bon voyage, etc. I can't remember the exact cost, but I know it was less than $50. You can also order a birthday cake to be delivered to your cabin or your table sometime during your cruise. We have done the decorating and the cakes before and they were great. You can check the Carnival website for the details. Sounds like a great birthday present. Also, don't forget the ship will also have a casino if your wife enjoys gambling.

Cozumel is one port that has changed dramatically since the 80's. We used to fly down there to SCUBA dive in the 80's and that was about all you could do back then. There are a lot of different types of excursions available in Cozumel today. I am not familiar with the ports that the Pride visits, but I am sure it will be a great trip.

Bon Voyage

Sherrie

You are going to tell her and give her enough time to pack and prepare, right?

If you were such avids cruisers in the past, what happened to you that you gave it up for 15 years. that is a really long time in between.

Now that I am hooked I can't imagine going too far in betweeen cruises, let alone 15 years.

Anyway, I do think its a great gift. When is her birthday in relation to your sailing? Do you plan to wrap up the sailing documents, a picture of the cruise ship, how do you plan to tell her and before the cruise, or are you going to surprize her when you show up at the port?

Linda,
Why the long time? Life happens . Big reasons were the kids and school, my job at the time (I worked several years without a vacation) and our animals. Now the kids are grown, I’m still self employed (but without the need to baby-sit servers 7 days a week) and our youngest will be home for spring break to keep the cats and birds company. My wife has been bugging me to go on another one for years and I resisted because of the above reasons. That’s why it’ll be such a huge surprise! I only have a few more days I have to keep my trap shut! Then the fun begins as she gets antsy for six weeks…

Default What a great surprise!

Patio daddy-o,

What a GREAT surprise. My husband did the same thing for me (40th birthday) a few years ago. The Mexican Riviera cruise (Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, Cabo) is still the same...EXCEPT...Cabo has grown up more than you can imagine. On our last Pride cruise we did the Las Caletas tour in PV and had a blast. The Pride is a great Spirit class ship. You will find that the ships don't have a nightly grand buffet like they did in the 90's and 80's. Smoking areas are greatly reduced onboard. Casino's are pretty much like Reno, Vegas or the Indian casinos BUT I don't think the odds are as good. Another change is that the rooms have refrigerators in them (small but functionable) which is great. Your wife should be congratulated on having such a thoughtful spouse. The best part is that YOU will get to enjoy her birthday present as much as she does!

(I am a LONG time lurker on these boards and just couldn't resist replying! Thanks Cruisemates for being such a great website!)
