Get walkie talkies. Using cell phones you are chosing the most expensive communication service on the ship. International roaming charges make it more than even ship's satellite phone service.

Kuki is right.....I have Sprint with the International calling plan and we used our phones in port for 99 cents a minute. I think we totalled around $50.00 in charges. Our DD was 18 on our last cruise and we never let her wander around without an older person with her. Things happen, especially in Jamaica. AND her purse was stolen on the pier in Cozumel with all ID, lots of cash and credit cards....her 27 year old brother was right there and no one saw a thing. You can never be too careful with your children in a foreign country whether it's a girl or boy.

On board, we made sure everyone had at least two buddies and checked in regularly. We left sticky notes and pens in the cabin. A quick note with the time and where they were heading was reassuring. We used the walkie talkies but other passengers may not enjoy listening to your conversations.

The direct connect or push to talk feature works in all Mexican ports.
I talked to Seattle from Cabo, Mazatlan and PV at no charge other than the Nationwide fee.

I'm sorry, I just realized that you said Carribean.

Might work in Cozumel.
