Default Taxi Fares in St. Thomas

We have decided to just go downtown for shopping. I have read fares from and to downtown and the ship anywhere from $4pp to $10pp for the 2.5 mile trip. Are taxi fares also something to barter ?

Downtown is actually walking distance to me from the port where I saw the Carnival ships. Princess is at the new port and about 3 miles away.

Taxi's charged us per person, not per taxi and took as many as they could get into the taxi, not just the two of us. We paid $10 from town to Coki Beach and $11 back to Princess dock. per person.

Unless Carnival has moved to the Princess dock, you will be very close to town and probably wouldnt need a taxi.

Looking down (from the hillside tram) at the dock Carnival was using. Downtown is to the right of this view.

The taxi fars to downtown from the pier, as well as to different beaches, are pre-set. There is no variance, and no need to bargain.

It's $4 per person each way at the moment.

Nope, and Coki is the smaller, further out beach of the two. It has clearer water and is more used by the locals. We had a guy who was more than ready to take care of our needs and when it came time to leave, he had a taxi there and got everyone together. There were about 11 of us in total and we all fit in one vehicle and all went back together. The other beach where the tourists go costs $10 to get in, is bigger, but not as good for snokeling. Megan's Beach I think is the name of the other beach and it was about $8 pp from town for the taxi.

In fact we were told later that had we asked, the taxi who brought us out would have been more than glad to come back for us and probably was a little upset about not being asked to come back for us. They either really want that taxi fare or they are really trying to take care of you.
