Default How to break it to the kids?

Anyone have any good ideas how to surprise my 5,8, and 10 year old boys that we are all going on a 5 day cruise to the Carribean?

Why not buy a small basket, fill it with flip flops, sun screen, a book about the caribbean for kids, and go online find a picture of "your" ship, enlarge it a bit, and mount it on a stick to put in the fun basket, along with a balloon

Your kids will always be smiling onboard, so take LOTS of pictures:)

We aren't going until later this year but I really wanted to put a lot of thought into it and make it a HUGE surprise for them!

I wouldn't tell them anything. I'd load them in to the Car/Plane then when you get to the port take a picture of the look on their faces the first time they see the ship and then come back and post them here.

I like Beenie's idea also.
Is this your Destiny cruise out of Miami that you have the ticker for?
You could tell the kids you're going to Florida and you've got a little cabin on the water reserved for a few days- don't tell them the cabin is on a ship

Thats OK tell them nothing, you don't have to 'splain it, you are SUPERMOM! Just do it! Tell them it is on a need to know basis and they don't need to know and to sit down and be quiet and quit asking SUPERMOM annoying questions.

Then when it's time go to the port and get some great pics of their awe stricken faces

As I was reading all the posts, I was so glad that Beenie said,"Don't tell them anything!"
I have done that so many times with my kids and grandkids when I wanted to surprise them with a special event.

I think it is great to see their faces when it is something that they didn't expect. I also love to have them become so happy and excited after being unaware and thinking they were doing something else.

We did that with my one grandson..we took him to Talladega to the race and told him we were going to our place in Ohio. Thank goodness he slept the most of the way, because it only takes 2 hours to Ohio from here and it took 8 to Talladega. Hey, he was young. That wouldn't work now,but I would give it my best shot to surprise any of them.

Tell em' before you cruise. Anticipation is a biggie for our crowd.
Also, a club you can hold over their head. (Clean up your room or stay home with .....).
A friend of mine had a friend Naval Officer hand deliver the tickets to the birthday party. All the family & friends found out at the same time, the birthday girl and her sisters were the center of attention for weeks.

Have a fun trip

I'm with Beenie on this one! To young to fully understand anyway -- and you will be bombarded with questions - especially if you have an ADHD kid!

Also....
If you tell them before...do you really want to hear the
"WHEN ARE WE GOING TO BE THERE?"

I am still with Beanine...don't tell them, surprise them.

Any parent knows that you can hold the "if you don't so this or don't do that" over their head, that it just doesn't work! They know they will go.

Plus they also know that it will ruin your vacation if it is canceled because of not cleaning their room or doing chores. Leaving them home???? They know that won't happen either. Just my opinion

Surprise them
Darlene

One of my coworkers pulled the "don't tell them anything" on her husband. We live here in Florida, and he thought they were going over to Disney to play golf. She told him that there was a new ship in port, (Miracle) and she wanted to run by and take a look at it. He didn't know a thing, until she paid for "extended parking". At that point the cat was out of the bag. It was a great surprise for him, and they had a wonderful cruise aboard the "new at that time" Miracle.
I agree with Beenie. Don't tell them anything.

I would go with the "Don't tell them yet". Anticipation is fun for us but for some kids it can be agony. Days feel like weeks to them.

Some ideas though
Watch the cruise comercials and maybe the travel channel shows and talk about how someday that would be fun.
Arriving the day before the cruise removes a ton of stress, especially when traveling with children. Pick a nice beach hotel near the port and represent the trip as a beach vacation. When you don't unpack the first night you can admit that it would be boring to spend a whole week on the same beach so you plan to move all week.
When they see the big cruise ships from the commercials, reluctantly agree to take them for a closer look.
Impulsivly decide to "see if we can go inside".

Hopfully that will create an Adventure that they will never forget.

You guys make some really great points. My older boys are really smart and I think they might be abe to figure things out if we get down to Florida and start to tell them of a change in plans. The idea of going to check out one of the ships at the dock is wonderful but how do I explain the luggage we are bringing with us? Maybe we can tell them over dinner the night before we embark.....I don't know. I also had thoughts of a scavenger hunt... Keep the great ideas coming!!!!!

When ever we are taking our grand kids somewhere that is a suprise we always say that we are going to see a cat about a dog and to just go with the flow. I would not tell them where they are going until we got to the ship. That will be the best suprise that you will ever give them.

First: do they have their passports. If not, do it now and just tell them it's something that you need to have done. Kids passports are valid for five years.

Otherwise, don't say a word, send them all to a friend's or relatives a month in advance, pack their bags, put them in the trunk (their suitcases of course - boys are sooo easy), go to the friend's or relatives, pick up the kids, drop the bags and bring the kids home. Go back to the relatives or friends and retrieve their suitcases. Alternatively, think how you hide their holiday gifts and prepare their suitcases the same. Don't let them overhear ANY conversations. Retrieve the bags from the relatives. When you need to tell them anything, tell them they need to pack an overnight bag with whatever ipod, dvd player and charger and favorite movies they might like to take for a surprise road trip and tell them to leave their bags and the door and go to bed or whatever. Once they start seeing the airline or terminal signs or ship, they will know and will be absolutely ecstatic. Have that video camera handy and post it to cruisemates when you get back!

Let us know how you make out!

By the way, I wish I had any of you for grandparents, parents or aunts/uncles when I was a kid. I wasn't deprived since I was always near a beach but a surprise such as this would have been incredible. I'm so lucky that I have two unexpected granddaughters now that I will be able to travel with. The first is getting her "inaugural" cruise in October with her Mimi and PopPop. The other will have to wait until she's three, she's just two weeks today. Please keep all of us in your prayers so that God watches over the new little one and her mother to give her strength to follow the right path.

Cruisecouple,
You have a fantastic idea and is similar to what Beenie has written in the past. I think I'm going with the majority. I called my own grandfather Pop Pop. What a coincidence that I meet another one. There's not too many of you out there... As far as passports are concerned I was thinking about telling them the photos are for the program that keeps children's pictures in case they are snatched. Although telling them they just have to have them just because it's a rule is a great one.
